Gawèye (also: Gaoueye , Gawaye ) is a district ( French : quartier ) in the Arrondissement Niamey V of the city of Niamey in Niger .

geography

The district is bordered by the Kirkissoye district to the east and south and the Pont Kennedy district to the west . To the north of Gawèye is an agricultural area on the Niger River . The district hospital Gaweye is administratively own quartier . Gawèye extends over an area of about 44.5 hectares including the hospital grounds . The district lies on an alluvial floor that allows infiltration. The groundwater is at risk of being polluted.

The standard scheme for street names in Gawèye is Rue KI 1 , where the French Rue for street is followed by KI for Kirkissoye and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones mostly do not coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. The rue KI 1 scheme is not only used in Kirkissoye itself, but also in Gawèye, among others.

history

Hotel Gawèye at the original location of the district (2005)

Gawèye was originally not on the right, but on the left bank of the Niger River in the area of the later Kombo district on the Gounti Yéna dry valley . Gawèye Village was founded in the 19th century by Songhai and Kurtey from Gao . The place name comes from the Songhai language . There are two possible derivations: either from Gao or from the word gaw , which means "hunter". In the 1930s, the settlement was, along with Kalley , Koira Tagui , Maourey and Zongo, one of the five districts that made up Niamey, which was founded on the left bank of the river at the beginning of the 20th century.

Gawèye was moved to its current location in 1979 in the urban expansion area on the right side of the river, but grew less rapidly than other districts of Niamey in the following years. The reason for the relocation was that the state-owned international Hotel Gawèye , the conference building Palais des Congrès and the ONAREM building were built at the old location in the city center . In the 1980s, Gawèye and the neighboring district of Pont Kennedy were temporarily merged into one district.

population

At the 2012 census, Gawèye had 6956 inhabitants who lived in 1200 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 7,166 in 1,095 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 4,273 in 756 households.

Infrastructure

There are several primary schools in Gawèye. The secondary school Collège d'enseignement général de Gawèye (CEG Gawèye) has existed since 1992.
