Georg Albrecht Ernst von Manstein (born June 22, 1844 in Danzig ; † November 9, 1913 in Schreiberhau in the Riesengebirge ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He came from the old Prussian noble family von Manstein and was the youngest son of the later Prussian infantry general Gustav von Manstein (1805–1877) and his wife Auguste Mathilde, née Sperber (1811–1877).

Military career

On April 26, 1861, Manstein was transferred from the Cadet Corps as a non-commissioned officer to the 4th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 72 in Torgau . There he was on 11 January 1862 Portepee - Ensign and on 16 December of the same year second lieutenant promoted. During the German War , his regiment took part in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz , as well as the battle near Liebenau . From October 1, 1866 to January 1, 1869 he was a battalion adjutant . From January 10, 1869, he was a year in service with the Schleswig-Holstein Hussar Regiment No. 16 in Schleswig .

From March 10, 1870 to April 30, 1874 Manstein was adjutant in the 33rd Infantry Brigade in Altona . With her he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on September 6, 1870 and went to war against France . Manstein was transferred to the 7th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 96 in Altenburg on August 3, 1885 with his promotion as a surplus major . He was appointed battalion commander on October 16, 1886. When he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on February 14, 1891, he was transferred as a regular staff officer to the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment 89 in Schwerin . As such, he was assigned to an information course at the infantry shooting school in Spandau from May 4th to 17th, 1892 . On January 27, 1894, Manstein was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the Infantry Regiment No. 132 stationed in Strasbourg . On March 22, 1897, Manstein was promoted to major general in command of the 85th Infantry Brigade in Strasbourg. On June 3, 1899, Manstein was put up for disposal with the statutory pension in approval of his resignation .

family

Manstein had married Hedwig Bertha von Sperling . Since the marriage remained childless, the couple adopted Erich von Manstein (1887–1973), who later rose to become Field Marshal General in the Wehrmacht .
