Giliante D'Este

Giliante D'Este (born March 23, 1910 in Izola , † April 24, 1996 in Rome ) was an Italian rower and Olympic champion.

D'Este rowed for SN Pullino in his hometown, which fell from Cisleithanien to Italy in 1918 . At the Olympic Games in 1928 , the Italian four-man with helmsman in the line-up of Valerio Perentin , Giliante D'Este, Nicolò Vittori , Giovanni Delise and helmsman Renato Petronio won the gold medal with a 15 second lead over the boat from Switzerland. In 1929 the Italians won the European Championships against the Danish boat in the same line-up.

After moving to Rome, D'Este joined the association Circolo Canottieri Aniene . At the European Championships in 1931 , the four-man won with Antonio Provenzani , Francesco Cossu , Giliante D'Este, Antonio Ghiardello and helmsman Emilio Gerolimini . At the Olympic Games in 1932 , the Romans competed in four without a helmsman . Provenzani, D'Este, Cossu and Ghiardello finished third, one second behind the German four, almost six seconds behind the British winners.

In 1935 D'Este rowed again for SN Pullino. At the European Championships in Berlin , the Germans competed for the first time since the First World War and won in the four with a helmsman ahead of the French and the Italian four with Valerio Perentin, Giliante D'Este, Nicolò Vittori, Umberto Vittori and Renato Petronio. At the Olympic Games in 1936, the Germans won ahead of the Swiss and French. The Italian four-man with the same line-up as in 1935, after a preliminary defeat against the Swiss in the intermediate heat, only reached third place behind Hungary and Poland, only the winners of the preliminary heats and the winners of the intermediate heats reached the final.

In 1927 and 1928 with SN Pullino and in 1932 with CC Aniene , D'Este was Italian champion.
