The Glan-Blies cycle path is a 130 km long international long -distance cycle path . It begins in Saargemünd in France and crosses the Saarland along the Blies . Following the course of the Glan , it leads to Staudernheim in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Route

The cycle path begins on the Nahe cycle path . Passing the Disibodenberg monastery , you reach the Kuseler Musikantenland via Odernheim am Glan and Meisenheim . In the Veldenzstadt Lauterecken there is a rail connection and the possibility to switch to the Lautertal cycle path to Kaiserslautern. A few kilometers further you pass Offenbach-Hundheim with the former Benedictine provost church of St. Maria . It continues first in a south-westerly, then in a southerly direction to Altenglan . At Altenglan there is a connection to the Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg , which leads via Kusel on a former railway line to Freisen . Between Altenglan and Staudernheim there is the possibility of exploring the Glantal for around 40 km on a bicycle trolley. In the further course of the cycle path leads about two kilometers next to the main road.

Between Glan-Münchweiler and Niedermohr you can branch off onto the Barbarossa cycle path , which leads through the northern Palatinate to Worms. From Glan-Münchweiler, the route leads along the old railway line of the Glantalbahn via Nanzdietschweiler with the old washing facility and the still-preserved mill from 1884 through the Elschbach tunnel . You continue past the Ohmbachsee to Schönenberg-Kübelberg , where you pass the listed train station . Next, the path leads past Waldmohr with its moor mill and the Eichelscheiderhof . Here you leave the railway line and continue on bike paths to Homburg .

In addition to the old town, you can also visit the Hohenburg castle ruins and the largest red sandstone caves in Europe . From Beeden the path runs along the Blies through the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve . In Wörschweiler, it is worth making a detour to the monastery ruins or via the Blies to Schwarzenacker to the Roman Museum . In the further course you come to Blieskastel with its baroque old town. Now the path runs on the former embankment of the Bliestalbahn . The last stop on German soil is the European Culture Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim with a Celtic princess grave and remains of settlements from Roman times . Here, the German-French border is exceeded, and to get to the end of the path after Saargemünd (French. Sarreguemines) at the mouth of the assemblies in the Saar .

In Sarreguemines, the Glan-Blies-Weg connects to the north of the Saar cycle path , which runs parallel to the Saarland cycle path between Saargemünd and Völklingen . To the south there is a connection to the cycle path on the Saar Canal and thus to the French cycle path network.

Signage and nature of the path

The two-river trail is signposted throughout. The signs along the route contain information on the distance and destination as well as the route logo . The multi-colored logo shows a waving cyclist and bears the words “Glan-Blies-Weg”. The route runs mainly on paved forest , farm and cycle paths.

The cycle path between the city limits of Homburg and Glan-Münchweiler is particularly poorly developed and no longer up-to-date for an international long-distance cycle route. There it runs for around 20 km (with the exception of short sections of tunnels) on loose ground and in the Jagsburger Wald area for around 5 km on roughly gravel forest paths.
