history

Carmelites settled in Le Mans as early as 1830 , where they initially took care of the upbringing of children. In 1833 they moved to a new building and had a chapel built there from 1850, which was consecrated in 1853. Since the construction costs of the chapel were much higher than planned, the nuns were dependent on income. With the help of Eugène Hucher (1814–1889), who also became their first director, they therefore set up a workshop for the manufacture of leaded glass windows .

The Carmelites carried out the first orders together with Antoine Lusson's glass factory. The brothers Karl and Friedrich Küchelbecker, who came from Germany, worked there since 1849. After the death of Antoine Lusson sen. In 1854 the Küchelbecker brothers left the factory and switched to the Carmelite Sisters.

In 1872 the Carmelites sold the stained glass workshop to Édouard Rathouis, a nephew of the superior sister Eleonore. Édouard Rathouis had previously worked as an accountant on a merchant ship and had just returned from a trip to the Orient.

In 1880 the workshop was sold to Eugène Hucher, who ran it together with his son Ferdinand (1850–1903). Ferdinand Hucher took over the workshop after the death of his father in 1889. After the death of Ferdinand, who was unmarried and died childless, the glass painting workshop was closed in 1903.

activity

The stained glass workshop of the Carmelites of Le Mans equipped numerous churches, especially in western France, with leaded glass windows. She also received orders from the United States of America and carried out the restoration of old windows. In its heyday, up to 50 people were employed in the workshop.
