The Wuppertal Zoologischer Garten station (also known locally as Zoo station) is a station on the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld line in Wuppertal . The station building was entered on the list of historical monuments on August 31, 1987 .
The reception building
In the west of Wuppertal, when the Wuppertal Zoo opened in 1881, the villa district Zooviertel was created . The stop was built under the direction of the Prussian State Railway , which had previously taken over the route from the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft on January 1, 1882 . The dating of the start of construction creates difficulties; the monument authority decided on a year of construction of 1898, but the building can already be seen on a photo from 1892, which speaks for an earlier start of construction - according to sources 1886. His reception building on Siegfriedstrasse is connected to the zoo reception building on Hubertusallee by the straight connecting street, Walkürenallee.
The single - storey half-timbered building is covered with flat, protruding hip roofs. The front two-story entrance tower is striking. This is equipped with a steep, over-high hipped roof. The tower is provided with an altan-like gable dormer, which is pierced with a round arch. On the back, a broken stone base extends to the platform one floor below.
Todays use
After the establishment of the S-Bahn line S 8 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr on May 29, 1988, the stop no longer has a long-distance platform and it is only used as a S-Bahn stop. In addition to the S 8 from Mönchengladbach Hbf to Hagen Hbf (with extension to Dortmund Hbf ), the S 9 to Bottrop Hbf (with extension to Haltern am See ) has also stopped here since December 2003 . The remains of the former access to the long-distance platform can still be seen today on the northern part of the pedestrian bridge that still crosses the two middle tracks. The platform itself has been completely dismantled, but the long-distance train tracks are still in the same position, so that the distance between the tracks in the area of the stop is much greater than usual. The reception building now serves as a restaurant.
On the night of April 1, 2012, the roof of the listed reception building burned . As a result, both the roof structure and the facade were severely damaged, whereupon the building was classified as prone to collapse the next day under the first visual inspection. The cause of the fire remained unclear. According to estimates by the police, the fire caused property damage of at least 200,000 euros. The restaurant that was in the house was closed for renovation, was then refurbished according to the historical model and reopened in spring 2013.
Transfer relationships
The district line 639, which connects the train station with the zoo, Hindenburgstrasse and Sonnborn, and the leisure line 605 to the hiking car park at the Arboretum and the Müngstener Brückenpark stop right in front of the reception building . In addition, the zoo / stadium suspension railway station of the Wuppertal suspension railway is within walking distance , which enables you to change to the suspension railway and to another district bus line 629 to Lüntenbeck and to the suspension railway replacement bus line 600.
