hand

Hand is a district of Bergisch Gladbach and belongs to No. 15 to the statistics district 1 of the city.

The name

The interpretation of the name is controversial. One interpretation says that the place should have been named after a "hand sign", that is, after a sign in the form of a hand, who stood on an old path to Paffrath (today's Dellbrücker Strasse), which at this point on the Trade route from Cologne to Wipperfürth (today's federal highway 506). According to another interpretation, “hand” was formed from the folk etymology of the word “Hardt” (= forest). However, there are no written sources for this thesis. Finally, there is a topographical approach, according to which the settlement of Hand on an area at the western end of an elongated ridge (course of the Handstrasse) resembles a palm at the end of an arm. In addition to the topographical correspondence, this most likely thesis is based on the name form “Auf der Hand”, which is often mentioned in the written sources and is still in use today.

history

The Hand district emerged from an early modern settlement that was first mentioned in 1594 as "Gut an der Handt". It is recorded in the original cadastre as "Dorf Hand". Until the 18th century the settlement grew to 14 houses and, two years after Bergisch Gladbach was elevated to the status of a town (1858), it was the largest town in the district with 192 inhabitants.

In the area of the former Hermann-Löns-Kaserne , the location of the guard battalion at the Federal Ministry of Defense , a new residential area has been built since 2000 with the Hermann-Löns-Viertel . In four streets named after German Nobel Peace Prize winners , living space was created for around 1200 residents, mainly terraced and semi-detached houses, detached single-family houses and multi-family houses. The Hermann-Löns-Viertel also has an artificial turf pitch for sporting activities by various clubs from Bergisch Gladbach.

school and education

Hand has two primary schools due to the young population structure . The schools are in the center of Hand on St.-Konrad-Straße.

The municipal community elementary school Hand (GGS-Hand) uses several hand-sketched outstretched hands as a logo, which are colored and arranged in a circle around a center. The primary school has been a reliable primary school since the school year 1994/95 . The school children's house used for this was expanded as part of the open all-day school (OGS) to meet growing needs. There the children have the opportunity to eat cooked food on site. Homework supervision and an extensive range of leisure activities with educational support are also offered. The GGS-Hand support association provides play equipment and provides further support.

OGS of KGS in Bergisch Gladbach-Hand

In the 2006/2007 school year, a modern new KGS building was opened for all-day school operations by the school principal Monika Litzen and mayor Klaus Orth . However, this building is very controversial among the old hands, as it impairs the view of the historical structure.

The DRK is responsible for the open all-day elementary school ('OGS') of the KGS . The catholic elementary school Hand is the sixth elementary school in Bergisch Gladbach to offer afternoon care by the DRK.
