Season course
The league season was played as usual with ten teams, which had to play 18 matches in home and return matches. The defending champions were the women of SC Leipzig , who were only one point behind the new champions SC Empor Rostock . The Rostock women benefited from the Leipzig women’s home defeat against ASK Vorwärts on the last match day , while at the same time winning points in Magdeburg. For Empor it was the third indoor championship after 22 years ( 1967 ). She owed her title win mainly to the accurate goal throwers who scored by far the most goals in the league with 490 goals. With the FDGB Cup win , the team also made the double . TSG Wismar , which had already been a long-time member of the women's league in the past, and the company sports association (BSG) Umformtechnik Erfurt stepped up as the newcomers . While the Wismar women managed to stay in the league, the Erfurt women had to go back to the second class. Second relegated was the BSG Lokomotive Rangsdorf, which was bottom of the table with just one win and 17 defeats. The participant for the IHF Cup , which is usually shown in the final table, was determined this time in a separate tournament by the five sports club representatives.

Club tournament for participation in the IHF Cup
The five sports club representatives determined the participants for the IHF Cup from May 30th to June 3rd, 1989 in the sports hall in the Zwickau district of Neuplanitz . As Rostock (national champions 'cup) and Magdeburg (cup winners' cup) were already qualified for European cups, only runner-up Leipzig , ASK Vorwärts and TSC were eligible for participation in the IHF Cup. The tournament winner and qualifier for the IHF Cup was ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt, ahead of SC Empor Rostock and SC Leipzig with the same number of points. All three came to 6: 2 points each and, unlike in the championship, this time the goal difference decided the placement and not the direct duels.
