content

In 1944 during the Second World War , with the support of the Thule Society and the megalomaniac magician Grigori Rasputin , a seemingly immortal advisor to the last Russian tsar , the Nazis opened a dimensional portal through an occult ritual in order to unleash Hell on earth and war with To win help from unearthly powers. Allied soldiers, among them Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, however, interrupt the summoning, whereby Rasputin is sucked through the closing portal and destroyed, and find the spawn of Hell, a small red, devil-like , but friendly-minded demon , who passes through the portal came to earth. They call him Hellboy , and Bruttenholm takes him under his wing.

About 60 years later, Hellboy is still not quite an adult, but has become a huge and difficult to control demon. Under the code name Red he works for the Office for the Investigation and Defense against Paranormal Apparitions , a secret subdivision of the FBI with the motto "In Absentia Luci Tenebrae Vicunt." (Correct: "In absentia lucis tenebrae vincunt." , In German "In the absence of The shadows prevail. ”). Together with the telepath Abe Sapien, a humanoid marine life form with gills, webbed feet and blue skin (code name Blue ), who, like him, also lives in the secret department, he regularly goes on demon hunts, which are covered up from the public. Hellboy has extraordinary strength, one of his hands is significantly larger than the other and made of stone, he is immune to fire and armed with a revolver (called "The Samaritan") whose ammunition is made from a mixture of holy water, garlic, silver shavings and white oak, which is supposed to help against supernatural opponents. But he also has human weaknesses: he smokes cigars, likes to eat chocolate and nachos and takes care of small kittens. Hellboy also knows the human feeling of being in love. He regularly grinds his horns into short stumps. Bruttenholm has become a father substitute for him. He is also in love with the pyrokinetic Liz, who left the organization to lead a life beyond the paranormal instead of being a " freak ".

Finally, Rasputin is resurrected by his assistants Ilsa and Karl Ruprecht Kroenen and plans to bring about the apocalypse with Hellboy's help . He kills Hellboy's foster father Bruttenholm and lures the demon along with his comrades-in-arms - Liz, who has returned to the organization after an uncontrolled outbreak of her abilities (triggered by Rasputin), the young FBI agent John Myers, who has an eye on Liz, and the director for special operations Tom Manning - to Russia .

Rasputin provokes Hellboy, among other things, by stealing Liz's soul. In order to save them, Hellboy surrenders to his destiny to open the gate to the hell dimension with the help of his stone hand, whereby his honed horns grow to full size and inflame, giving him his true demonic form. But at the last moment John succeeds in persuading Hellboy to repent by reminding him that he himself is master of his fate and does not have to be a demon. Hellboy decides in favor of humanity, breaks off his horns again and destroys Rasputin and the hell being set free by him. Then Hellboy succeeds in resuscitating Liz too. When they kiss, Liz goes up in flames, which cannot harm the fire-proof Hellboy, and John realizes that his advances towards Liz were in vain.

background

  • The quote at the beginning of the film comes from De Vermis Mysteriis , a grimoire that is mentioned in Lovecraft's Cthulhu myth , among other things . The creatures shown at the beginning of the film, locked in a crystalline prison, also come from the Cthulhu myth.
  • The abbreviation BPRD stands for Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (German: Authority for the investigation and defense of paranormal phenomena). The secret authority operates under the code name Squeaky Clean Up Waste Management Services in the film .
  • In the film, the date April 14, 1865 is mentioned as the day on which Abraham Lincoln died, which explains Abe Sapien's first name (Abe is short for Abraham). In fact, Lincoln was shot that day, but he didn't die until April 15th.
  • The holy lance shown in the film is a replica of the lance that legend says was used to stab Jesus in the side of the cross. The alleged original is in the treasury of the Vienna Hofburg.
  • According to the film, Karl Ruprecht Kroenen was born in Munich in 1897 and suffers from a body dysmorphic disorder through which he has a masochistic compulsion to self- mutilate.
  • The text, composed of two old scraps of paper, is written in Cyrillic and actually means cemetery no.16 when translated . In the film it is stated that it would mean Sebastian Plaskba # 16 .
  • At 01:16:00, Trevor Bruttonholm reads in an edition of the Illustrierte Zeitung from November 7th, 1868. There is a picture of Rasputin . In the original edition, there is a picture by Friedrich Zarncke at this point . The article heading on Rasputin's mausoleum was also inserted differently from the original. The heading actually refers to the sinking of the Russian frigate Alexander Nevsky , which can also be seen from the text below the heading. This was not changed.
  • Hellboy's real name is Anung un Rama , which translated means the monster of the apocalypse .
  • The producers originally wanted to cast the title role with Vin Diesel . However, director Guillermo del Toro insisted on Ron Perlman as Hellboy and prevailed with it.
  • Released on DVD in both the version shown in the cinema and an approximately ten minutes longer director's cut , the higher Certificate (FSC aged 16 has).

Reviews

"Atmospherically coherent comic film adaptation with perfectly cast actors, excellent make-up and set design and a consistent morbid-sarcastic mood."

“'Hellboy' is a film from the Hollywood fast food division. All those who can make friends with the formula '90 percent action - 10 percent action 'and who expect nothing more from an actioner than great entertainment without compromise are at the right place here. 'Hellboy' is definitely a big step forward compared to the weakest comic adaptation Catwoman so far, but it lacks a lot when it comes to genre primus ' Spider-Man ' or ' X-Men '. So be it. His audience will find 'Hellboy' with us too. "
