Archbishop Hermann Schäufele

Hermann Josef Schäufele (born November 14, 1906 in Stebbach ; † June 26, 1977 in Langenegg , Vorarlberg ) was a German clergyman and archbishop of Freiburg .

Life

Hermann Schäufele was born into a family of railway workers. This involved changing locations several times. He went to school in Bellingen and Sasbach before moving to the Freiburg Berthold-Gymnasium in 1920 . After graduating from high school, he entered the Collegium Borromaeum in 1925 and began studying Catholic theology . After just one semester, he was sent to Rome to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he completed his studies within nine years, received the sacrament of ordination on October 25, 1931 , and received a doctorate in philosophy and theology . This was followed by positions in Elzach and Mannheim before he was appointed student chaplain in Freiburg. Like many youth ministers , he was targeted by the Gestapo several times . In 1938 he joined the Catholic student union Unitas-Lichtenstein. After their ban in the same year, many of the liaison events were held in Hermann Schäufele's house.

From 1946 Schäufele was director of the Collegium Borromaeum, in 1950 Konviktdirector, in 1954 official and a little later cathedral capitular . On April 11, 1955, Pope Pius XII appointed him . as titular bishop of Leptis Magna and auxiliary bishop in Freiburg. The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Eugene Page Rich on May 11 of that year. Co -consecrators were Bishop Isidor Markus Emanuel von Speyer and the Mainz auxiliary bishop Josef Maria Reuss .

After Archbishop Seiterich's early death in 1958, the cathedral chapter chose Hermann Schäufele as his successor. Pope Pius XII then appointed him archbishop and metropolitan of the Upper Rhine ecclesiastical province . On September 16, 1958, he was introduced to his office by the Archbishop of Bamberg , Josef Schneider . In the same year he was accepted as an honorary member of the KDStV Hercynia Freiburg im Breisgau .

His episcopate fell during the period of reconstruction and the economic miracle. At the same time, social changes increased. From 1962 to 1965 he took an active part in the Second Vatican Council and, as a member of the Commission for the Bishops and the Administration of the Dioceses, had a direct influence on the formulation of important statements of the Council. The post-conciliar renewal of the church in his diocese also fell within his term of office. The establishment of democratic structures, however, did not correspond to his ideal of the clerical and episcopal church.

He died on June 26, 1977 in his favorite vacation spot in Vorarlberg while praying the rosary , the year in which the 150th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Freiburg was celebrated. This anniversary was an important concern for Schäufele. But he could no longer witness the actual anniversary day.

Honors

On September 22nd, 1962, he was granted honorary citizenship in grateful recognition of his services to the elevation of the pilgrimage church of St. Georg in Walldürn to the minor basilica and in appreciation of his lively participation in the prosperity of the city and its citizenship . In 1966 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany. On November 12, 1960, the Archbishop of Freiburg was presented with the honorary citizenship of the city of Geisingen in a ceremony.
