NGC 4862 = IC 3999 is a 14.2 mag bright bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type "SBc" in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 283 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4863 , NGC 4887 , NGC 4899 , NGC 4902 .

The object was discovered three times; first on March 25, 1786 by Francis Preserved Leavenworth (observation listed as NGC 4862 ) and probably at the same time by Herbert Alonzo Howe without his own cataloging; the third observation by Guillaume Bigourdan on April 16, 1895 is listed as IC 3999 .
