The Inlandsbanan ( German  inland railway , literally translated Inlandsbahn ) is a railway line in central and northern Sweden between Gällivare in the north and Mora in the south, which mainly serves tourist traffic .

route

It is operated by the railway company Inlandsbanan AB and runs on the northern and central section of the Swedish railway line "Inlandsbahn".

offer

SJ Y1 series
diesel multiple units

The line is served in two sections. The southern part runs between Östersund and Mora, the northern part between Östersund and Gällivare . The full length of the connection is only offered in the summer months from June to August. The connection is made with diesel railcars of the SJ Y1 series . Some of them have monitors in the passenger compartment , on which the view of the route is transmitted from the driver's perspective .

These vehicles are to be replaced in the near future by type LINT 41 railcars , which were bought second-hand in the Netherlands. A first vehicle has arrived in Östersund, four more are currently (2019) initially being refurbished in Poland for tourist use on the inland railway.

Since the majority of the passengers are tourists, the journey is interrupted several times according to the schedule to visit attractions (for example a bear cave at Björnidet stop or at the Arctic Circle ). Longer stops are made for coffee breaks and meals. Meals can be ordered in advance from the train staff. Interrail tickets are recognized and the Inlandsbanekortet is a “ network card ” that is valid for 14 days for any number of trips on the line. Reservations are recommended. Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout the journey , and an app shows the exact location on a map and provides information on things to see along the route.

Northern section

The northern part of the line from Östersund to Gällivare is driven in double traction with two SJ Y1 railcars if there is a corresponding number of passengers . Otherwise, individual vehicles are used. Due to the length of the route, a return journey with a single train is not possible in one day. There are therefore two trains running in opposite directions. The journey takes over 13 hours. The scheduled crossing takes place in Sorsele station . From 2010 to 2012 there was an additional train connection between Östersund and Storuman , mainly in July ; this connection was discontinued in 2013.

Southern section

The southern part of the line is served once a day in each direction - all year round since the 2012/2013 timetable . A class SJ Y1 railcar is normally used. Due to the length of the route, a single train can travel there and back in one day. From 2010 to 2012 there was an additional train connection between Östersund and Mora, mainly in July, so that two trains were running simultaneously and in opposite directions on the route. This connection was discontinued in 2013. Mainly for schoolchildren and students, Inlandsbanan AB in cooperation with Länstrafik i Jämtlands län also offered a train connection between Östersund and Sveg on weekends , which was extended to Mora from 2010. After the end of the 2013 summer timetable, this connection was completely canceled.

There is a connection between Mora and Kristinehamn operated by the Tågåkeriet i Bergslagen railway company . Since the inland railway is no longer continuously passable south of Mora, its trains travel via Borlänge and only meet the old line in Nykroppa.

Individual evidence

  1. a b Information according to: Ombord. Inlandsbanan's on-board magazine 2014 , p. 25.
  2. SJ and the station sign designate the stop as "Morastrand", the Inland Railway uses the designation "Mora Strand". For both see current timetables.
  3. In Swedish , the ending “-n” in nouns has the function of a specific article . The article die is also added because of the requirements of German grammar.
