Jefferson Agustín Farfán Guadalupe (born October 26, 1984 in Lima ) is a Peruvian football player . He is under contract with Lokomotiv Moscow in the Premjer League .

Club career

Time in Peru

Farfán was in the district of Villa El Salvador in Lima born. He grew up with his mother because his father worked as a businessman and was often on business trips. His first club was Deportivo Municipal , which he joined when he was nine. In 1999, at the age of 14, he joined the youth department of the largest soccer club in Lima, Alianza Lima . He made his professional debut on July 28, 2001 against Deportivo Wanka at the age of 16. In the following games, Farfán became an important player in the Alianza squad and was voted Player of the Year in 2002. Farfán won the Peruvian Championship in 2003 and 2004 and was named the best player of the competition in 2004.

PSV Eindhoven

In June 2004 he moved to PSV Eindhoven for an estimated 3.5 million euros and signed a contract until 2010. He played his first competitive game for his new club on August 14, 2004 in the league game against RBC Roosendaal , in which he was 78 .Minute came on for DaMarcus Beasley . He scored his first league goal on matchday 6 in a 4-0 win over SC Heerenveen . For PSV he scored important goals in the Dutch league and in the UEFA Champions League , in which they reached the semi-finals in the 2004/2005 season. He played his first Champions League game in the 1-0 away defeat against Arsenal . A month later he scored his first Champions League goal in a 2-1 away win against Rosenborg BK . Over the course of four years he scored 61 goals across all competitions for PSV. From 2005 to 2008 he was Dutch champion four times in a row and in 2005 he also won the KNVB Cup .

FC Schalke 04

For the 2008/09 season he moved to FC Schalke 04 for 10 million euros , which made him the most expensive transfer in the club's history. He signed a four-year contract. In his first Bundesliga appearance on September 13, 2008 in the Revierderby at Borussia Dortmund , he scored his first league goal for Schalke with a hand penalty. Farfán established himself as one of the club's leading performers.

In the 2011/12 season, Farfán made his 100th Bundesliga appearance on October 23, 2011 in the away game at Bayer 04 Leverkusen , in which he also scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 win. In April 2012 Farfán extended his contract for four years until 2016.

Despite his playful quality and great popularity in the fan community, Farfán often caused a sensation off the pitch. He extended his vacation several times without consulting the club, came back late from international trips or threatened not to extend his contract if he did not raise his salary, which earned him the reputation of a rip-off and mercenary in the tabloid press.

Apart from a brief assignment on matchday 30 of the 2013/14 season , Farfán has not been used since the beginning of March 2014 due to persistent problems with his right knee. After conservative treatment of his symptoms was unsuccessful, he decided to have an operation. It was not available until at least autumn 2014 and therefore missed the start of the 2014/15 season . After a long injury break, Jefferson Farfán celebrated his comeback against Bayer Leverkusen in March 2015 when he came on for Max Meyer in the 78th minute. In the following games he was used more often, but then drove after the season with the national team to the Copa America instead of catching up on his training deficit. In addition to his advanced age and susceptibility to injury, this was also a reason for the sale in summer 2015.

Al-Jazira

In August 2015, the first division side al-Jazira from Abu Dhabi signed Farfán and provided him with a three-year contract.

Moscow locomotive

On April 1, 2017, Farfán played his first game in the Russian Premier League for Lokomotiv Moscow , in which he also scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 away win. On May 5, 2018, he won with the team 1-0 against Zenit Saint Petersburg and thus secured the championship title in Russia.

National team

Farfán was part of the Peruvian squad at the U-20 South American Championship in Uruguay in 2003 . He played his first full international match for Peru on February 23, 2003 against Haiti . The Peruvian Football Association announced on December 9, 2007 that Farfán and three other players (including Claudio Pizarro , then Chelsea FC ) had been suspended from the national team until further notice. The background to this decision is the confirmed suspicion that these players did not adhere to internal association agreements and consumed alcohol without permission after a World Cup qualifying game against Brazil . In summer 2008, however, the Peruvian Football Association pardoned the players; they have been allowed to play for the national team again since July 6, 2008. Farfán made his comeback on September 4, 2010 in a 2-0 away win against Canada , in which he prepared both goals. In the summer of 2011 he was supposed to be part of the Peruvian Copa América squad , but suffered a torn hamstring while training the national team before the competition and had to forego participation. Due to his series of injuries, he has not been invited to national team games since autumn 2013, but celebrated his comeback on June 3, 2015 in a friendly against Mexico . At the Copa América 2015 , in which Peru won third place, he was again part of the Peruvian tournament squad and was used in four games.

In the international play-off second leg against New Zealand he scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory, which means that Peru (most recently at the 1982 World Cup) can take part in a soccer World Cup for the fifth time . He was then also in Peru's squad for the World Cup, but Peru was eliminated in the group stage after two 0-1 defeats against Denmark and France and a 2-0 win against Australia as third in Group C. Farfán started against Denmark and was substituted on against France. He was absent against Australia due to a concussion from a training match.

Style of play

Farfán is considered a very fast winger. He is less of an executor and more of a preparer. He has already contributed countless crosses, corners and passes to Schalke goals, especially on the international stage.

He often works backwards and thus supports his full-backs in their defensive work. Further strengths lie in his dribbles and his standards. He's a sure-footed penalty and free kick taker. As one of the few players in the Bundesliga, his speed hardly decreased when he wielded the ball by his foot. Farfán can also play as a full-back due to his defensive strength.

Others

Farfán's third child was born on May 16, 2012. He was present at the delivery in Lima and filmed the birth. He and his long-term partner had previously become parents of a son in 2007.
