The village is located in Western Pomerania , about 18 kilometers south of Kołobrzeg ( Kolberg ) and about 100 kilometers northeast of the regional metropolis of Szczecin .

The closest neighboring towns are Gościno (Groß Jestin) and Gościno-Dwór (Gut Groß Jestin) in the north, Myślino (Moitzlin) in the northeast , Wartkowo (Wartekow) in the south and Kamica (Kämitz) in the west .

history

The first documented mention of the village comes from the year 1276. At that time, the Bishop of Cammin, Hermann von Gleichen , confirmed his possessions to the Kolberg Cathedral Chapter . The village called "Carcowe" at that time was assigned to the third canon pillar. In 1302 a Steslaus de Karckow was mentioned in a document. From the year 1355 it is handed down that a Stephan von Karkow and his sons from the Kolberger cathedral chapter took the neighboring village Moitzlin as a fief.

In the 16th century, Karkow, like Moitzlin, was a fief of the noble Blankenburg family . Karkow remained in the possession of the Blankenburg family until the 19th century.

"Kerckow" is entered on the Lubin map of the Duchy of Pomerania from 1618.

In Ludwig Wilhelm Brüggemann's Detailed Description of the Duchy of Western and Western Pomerania (1784), Karkow is listed as a noble residence among the noble estates of the Principality of Cammin . At that time there was a Vorwerk in Karkow , i.e. the farm, with a sheep farm, a windmill (the Karkower Mühle ), a lime hut and a brick barn, four farms, two cottages and a forge, a total of 16 households ("fire places").

Since the 19th century Karkow belonged to owners from different middle-class families.

From the 19th century Karkow formed its own political manor district , which last comprised an area of 566 hectares. In addition to Karkow, the Karkower Mühle residential area belonged to the estate district . With the general dissolution of the manor districts in Prussia in 1928, the manor district of Karkow was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Wartekow . Until 1945, Karkow belonged as part of the municipality Wartekow to the Kolberg-Körlin district of the Pomerania province .

Towards the end of World War II , Karkow was occupied by the Red Army . Like all areas east of the Oder-Neisse border , the village came to Poland. The village population was driven out . The place name was Polonized as "Karkowo".

Today the village forms its own Schulzenamt in the Polish Gmina Gościno (community Groß Jestin) .
