history

In 1632 , the Archimandrite of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, Petro Mohyla, founded an Orthodox school on the territory of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Classes in the monastery school were held in Latin as well as in Polish. It was based on the model of the Polish elite schools of the time - the colleges. As early as January 1694, the Kiev school had been granted rights similar to that of an academy without granting it this status. The Kiev Metropolitan Warlaam therefore applied to Tsar Peter I in 1701 for the granting of full rights to an academy, and on September 26, 1701, the latter confirmed the rights of the Kiev school, which had already been granted in 1694. According to some sources, in this letter he already assigned the college the status of an academy, according to other sources, however, not until 1720. In the 18th century the academy was one of the most renowned teaching institutions in the Orthodox world with well-known professors and scholars. The Academy was in 1817 by the Russian Emperor Alexander I. closed. In 1819 , a Kiev Theological Academy was reopened in the buildings of the Kiev Mohyla Academy. After the October Revolution in 1918 , the Academy was closed and the buildings were sold to the military Dnipro passed -Flottille and immediately used for a naval college.

The academy was only able to reopen in 1992 . The initiators were numerous Ukrainians in exile from the USA and Canada as well as the first President of NaUKMA Vyacheslav Brjuchowezkyj . In 1994 the college was awarded the status of a state university.

In 1992 he founded his publishing house "Duch i Litera" (Spirit and Letter) on the Kostjantyn Sihow campus, and in 1996 the "Publishing House of the Mohyla Academy" began its publishing activity. The humanities journal "Kyjiwska Akademija" appears here.

During the Orange Revolution in 2004 , NaUKMA was the first university in Ukraine to take part in the mass demonstrations for the opposition candidate and President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko , who was in office until 2010 .
