The Rathenow district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Kyritz , Nauen , Brandenburg-Land , Brandenburg / Havel , Genthin and Havelberg .

history

The district emerged from the Westhavelland district , which in turn emerged in 1816 from the division of the Havelland district . The district essentially existed in its original form until 1950. On June 1, 1925, the township of Rathenow left the Westhavelland district, from then on formed its own urban district and was an exclave in the middle of the district. From June 1, 1950, the Rathenow district lost its municipal status as an urban district and became part of the Westhavelland district. At the same time, various communities from the Westhavelland district were transferred to the Brandenburg (Havel) district and the Osthavelland district . As a result of the administrative reform in the GDR at that time, the districts of Nauen and Rathenow were created on July 25, 1952, from the districts of East and West Havelland, with considerable territorial losses . After several changes to the district boundaries until the mid-1950s, the Rathenow district remained in existence from May 17, 1990 with the name Rathenow district until the Brandenburg district reform on December 6, 1993. After that, he was with the district Nauen to Havelland merged. The city of Rathenow became the seat of the district administration in the Havelland district.
