history

On July 25, 1952, there was a fundamental district reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states lost their importance and new districts were founded. The new Gransee district was created from parts of the old Templin and Neuruppin districts. The district was assigned to the new district of Potsdam . The seat of the district administration was in the city of Gransee .

With the reunification in 1990 the Gransee district became a district under German municipal law . On May 17, 1990, the district was also formally renamed Gransee District . From October 3, 1990 it belonged to the then newly founded state of Brandenburg .

Others

In 1995, the area of the former Gransee district took first place in a study on the quality of life in Germany (Dieter Korczak: Quality of Life Atlas. Westdeutscher Verlag, Opladen 1995, page 142):

“Eight individual indicators have been taken into account for the calculation of the quality of life index environment: The settlement, forest and water area, the quality of the drinking water and the pollution with SO2, NO2, ozone and dust. In other words, it is about pure air, pure water, pure and unsealed soil. [...] The Brandenburg district of Gransee north of Berlin and south of the Mecklenburg Lake District has the best environmental conditions in Germany. The water in this district is abundant and clean. Neither nitrogen oxides nor sulfur dioxide nor dust pollute the environment. Like all 'green' regions, however, the Gransee district also has to struggle with ground-level ozone pollution. In the Gransee district there are idyllic places such as the small town of Fürstenberg, which extends over three islands between Röblinsee, Balensee and Schwedtsee. Fürstenberg has always been valued as an East German holiday resort in surroundings rich in forests and lakes. "

License Plate

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinguishing signs starting with the pair of letters DE from around 1974 to the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was DY 00-01 to DY 20-00 .

At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinguishing mark GRS . It was issued until the end of 1993.
