Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lego Star Wars: The Awakening of power ( own notation : LEGO STAR WARS: THE AWAKENING OF POWER , English Original title: Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens ) is an action adventure that on the same feature film based and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment or Feral Interactive ( macOS ) and was developed by TT Fusion for Android , iOS , Microsoft Windows , Nintendo 3DS , macOS X , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , PlayStation Vita , Wii U , Xbox 360 and Xbox One . The computer game represents the fifth part of the Lego Star Wars series and is the successor to Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars .

On June 10, 2019, a successor to Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was announced for 2020 , which will thematically cover all nine feature films published to date .

Gameplay

The game mechanics of Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens are similar to other Lego video games previously developed by TT Games . The level- and movement-based action-adventure combines an arcade-like character control with just a few action commands with game elements of an adventure of exploring the environment, solving puzzles and collecting objects. One or two players control one of several main or secondary characters from a third-person perspective . Each hero has special abilities, tools or weapons. For example, Chewbacca has explosives that can be used to destroy shiny silver Lego bricks, and Han Solo has electric binoculars that can be used to scan the environment at certain points in the game. In order to solve the surrounding puzzles, you usually have to switch between several characters and cooperate. The game contains 240 different playable characters , "legified" versions of the original actors, and various locations from the Star Wars universe. In free play, ten additional characters can be put together with a character editor.

The primary goal of the game is to complete the campaign that ends when Luke Skywalker is found. The secondary goal is to research, collect and unlock all trophies, so to complete with 100% game progress.

Move

The characters are modeled after minifigs .

The movement is controlled either via the keyboard ( WASD control) or with the left analog stick of a gamepad . The minifig figures walk (or roll) predominantly on horizontal surfaces , can jump, dodge to the side, climb, crawl and swing at given points and interact with terminals. Few characters have the ability to double jump. The characters can fight close and far, solve environmental puzzles and collect Lego bricks, the in-game currency. In addition, some animals (“mounts”) can be ridden and miniature spaceships (“microfighters”) can be flown over the ground. Allied non-player characters (NPC) automatically follow the player (s) at a short distance, provided the level geometry allows it.

Combat system

The ground fights usually take place in close quarters combat (" Close Quarters Battle ") with lightsabers , sticks or fists. Most opponents can be defeated in the style of a simple hack and slay by pure button mashing . Some characters have a finishing move that takes place in slow motion .

Long-range combat is almost exclusively conducted with automatic firearms ("blasters") by sight, sometimes stationary guns and ruff can also be used. The firearms differ mainly in their cadence , not in their hit effect. Because of the unlimited ammunition, it is possible to play in continuous fire (“spray”). With a crosshair opponents can be targeted, a target search support ("auto-aim") facilitates the fire fight. In a few sections the characters can fire from cover (“cover shooter”). A context-sensitive special attack (" power-up ") can be carried out when the display shows full power .

The space and aerial combat in the X-Wing or in the Millennium Falcon is also carried out from the third-person perspective with a target cross. There are scenarios on defined trajectories (" Rail Shooter ") as well as with dogfight within limited air corridors.

The opponents are divided into imperial stormtroopers who shoot standing from a distance ("ranged"), and mostly squads that run towards the player from a minimum distance ("aggro range") and seek uncoordinated close combat ("mêlée"). After three bullet hits, the stormtroopers disintegrate into their components. Bosses with significantly more hit points ( "hit points") can be recognized by a circular remaining energy indicator. Allied minifigs can be injured by self- fire . If a character dies in combat or from a crash, he will spawn immediately and indefinitely in almost the same place. Due to immortality , the game cannot be lost, without a game over or "permadeath" wrong decisions remain without consequences.

Bonus system

The in-game currency are studs as well as red and gold 2 × 2 Lego blocks ("bricks") that can be collected. Red hearts increase life energy . Collectibles such as B. distributed gray carbonite stones. In order to collect all (hidden) objects ("collectibles") of a level, the player must visit them again after the campaign has been completed and all heroes have been unlocked, which improves the replay value . In each of the 18 levels there are ten mini-kits, one red and two gold bricks, a third can be unlocked by collecting studs. 60 trophies can be unlocked. Further quests can be completed in free play . It is not possible to level up game characters with loot or items , these only serve to unlock additional characters, skins or mini spaceships.

Game modes

The game can be played either in single player or in co-op mode with split screen , there is no online mode . The game's consistently low level of difficulty cannot be varied. The game status cannot be saved during a game segment . According to Computer Bild , the levels last between 30 to 45 minutes, so the story campaign offers around 8 hours of playing time, the total playing time is estimated at 30 hours.

Level design

As with its four predecessors, the game environment consists entirely of terminal blocks or is kept in their formal language. The architectural design of the internal level and the landscaping of the outdoor levels and their illumination is based on the scene image of the feature films. Most levels , however, are tubular with only one solution path, which means that backtracking is largely avoided. The level geometry is mainly horizontal, only a few climbing passages ensure verticality. The dominant scrolling ("scrolling") is from left to right and from front to back. In numerous places within the level puzzles or puzzle chains have to be solved in order to reach the next section. These are often puzzle-like tasks in which, for example, stone blocks or gears have to be assembled or mechanical machines have to be operated or positioned correctly. Some objects can be pushed, opened or blown across the floor. Some puzzles are action-based as they have to be completed during a firefight or are even integrated directly into a fight. For example, in one section during the fight the character has to bypass an opponent who is in cover and fight from a higher and laterally placed platform. The surrounding puzzles can only be solved in exactly one way and cannot be circumvented, alternative play styles are not possible. All changes made in a level are reset after leaving and are therefore not persistent . Trigger points in the level start the intermediate and script sequences . The textures of the minifig and items have a plasteline polymer look .

Locations

The game world is divided into nine atmospheric planets and a spaceship, indoor and outdoor levels are combined and small open-world areas function as a game hub.

  • Endor (Prologue) is a heavily forested moon that houses the shield generator of the second Death Star and is the home planet of the Ewoks.
  • Jakku (Chapters 1–3) is a sandy desert planet that Rey grew up on in the Niima Outpost and collects junk in the Goazon Wasteland. Members of the Church of Power live in Tuanul Village.
  • The Millennium Falcon (Chapter 4) is a light space freighter, which was developed by the Corellian engineering company as a civilian cargo ship, and whose interiors are accessible.
  • Takodana (Chapters 5-6) is a forest planet on which the castle and tavern of the pirate Maz Kanata is located.
  • D'Qar (Chapter 7) is a forest planet that serves as a naval base for the Resistance under General Leia Organa.
  • The Starkiller Base (Chapters 8-10) is a First Order mobile stronghold and houses a super weapon of planetary size.
  • Ahch-To (Epilog) is an ocean planet with small islands, the founding place of the Jedi Order and the self-chosen exile of Luke Skywalker.
  • Kerroc (bonus level "The Red Robber") is an inhospitable planet on which the First Order maintains a base.
  • Twon Ketee (bonus level "Rathtar hunt") is a poisonous swamp planet and home to the invertebrate species Rathtar.
  • Taul is an acidic planet in the Outer Rim. The bonus level "Trouble with Taul" takes place in a falling hammerhead corvette in its orbit.

Eight bonus missions can be unlocked. Four more levels are available as downloadable content .

action

After the prologue , the "Fight for Endor" from The Return of the Jedi Knights (Episode 6), which also serves as a tutorial and explains the game mechanics, "The Force Awakens" follows the narrative of the feature film in 10 chapters, almost exactly in chronological order . but as a "funny staged homage ", "silly and carefree" with some " slapstick ". The commanded by Kylo Ren execution of the village population of Tuanul on Jakku and his parricide missing. The campaign ends with the epilogue "Luke's Island". In addition to the film adaptation, the game also addresses the time span of 30 years between The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens . The production company Lucasfilm gave the developer studio a great deal of creative freedom for the additional content that elaborates the background stories of individual characters . The dialogues were developed under the direction of script writer Graham Goring.

The story is strictly linear and is through dialogue and cutscenes driven content ( "cutscenes"). The player's decisions have no influence on the narrative, so they are not interactive.

presentation

The graphics engine of the Windows version supports the DirectX9c and X11 programming interfaces and optionally offers anti-aliasing , shadows, motion blur , depth of field and atmospheric lighting. The image resolution can be changed from SVGA (800 × 600 pixels) to 2K (2560 × 1440 px). In the game, the camera follows the character in the third-person perspective, displaying it in the center of its three-dimensional environment. The position of the camera and its viewing angle can be influenced to a limited extent by the player. The graphical user interface (GUI) provides information about the two selected characters, their life points and the total number of points. A round mini map on the lower left edge of the screen makes orientation easier and shows points of interests (POI) .

Synchronization and soundtrack

The English dubbing was spoken by the actors Daisy Ridley , Oscar Isaac , John Boyega , Adam Driver , Carrie Fisher , Harrison Ford , Anthony Daniels , Domhnall Gleeson , Gwendoline Christie and Max von Sydow for their respective roles, as well as Bill Kipsang Rotich as Nien Nunb, Christian Simpson as C'Ai Threnalli and Tom Kane , who resumed his speaking role as Admiral Ackbar from various Star Wars video games. Archive recordings from the feature film also serve as dialogue material for the game.

For the German dubbing of the prologue, the developer studio hired almost all of the original German speakers from the classic trilogy to speak their former film roles again. Wolfgang Pampel is the main voice of Harrison Ford , Hans-Georg Panczak as Mark Hamill , Friedhelm Ptok as Ian McDiarmid and Rainer Schöne is the spokesman for Darth Vader. The German voice actors from the feature film were also commissioned again for the main plot.

As a soundtrack of original was film music of American composer John Williams licensed. The Wilhelmsschrei can also be heard.

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens was largely received positively by the trade press . The Metascore of the Metacritic aggregator ranges from 72% (Windows) to 78% (PS4).

“The good balance between shooting and puzzles makes the new Lego Star Wars a very entertaining game - and for even more variety, TT Games have even made use of the competition: As in Tomb Raider, you jump and swing - mostly with the acrobatic Ray - over many an abyss and shimmy past stormtroopers or dive away with Han Solo & Co. in an Uncharted -like racing sequence in the Millennium Falcon from a huge Ratharen monster. Completely surprisingly, typical shooter inserts from the Gears of War brand have even been embedded in the colorful genre mix . "

“In general, Lego Star Wars is one thing in particular: fan service . The true-to-original environments, the countless characters, the iconic text intro, the soundtrack with original melodies and various allusions - connoisseurs of the film series take a lot more with them from the game than the rest. […] It's another game based on the Lego blueprint and Those who have not enjoyed the Lego games before will probably not really warm up to the new Star Wars implementation either. "

- Niklas Broichhagen : PS4 Source

“Despite the amount of original content, there is too much leaning on past successes. The Lego recipe hasn't changed much, so the collecting of studs and gold bricks […] becomes repetitive. [...] Ultimately, it's a beautifully animated action-adventure game with occasionally spectacular views from space and of magnificent landscapes on various planets. "

[...] Ultimately, it is a beautifully animated action adventure with occasional spectacular shots from space and wonderful landscapes on different planets. "

- Harold Goldberg : The Washington Post

Andy Kelly describes the game in the English computer game magazine PC Gamer as "an average action game, saved by a charming sense of humor and a captivating sense of fun." The US online magazine GameSpot rated the Wii-U version of the game a 7 out of 10 possible points. Several publications criticize program crashes and program errors that made levels unsolvable.
