The men's 200-meter run at the European Athletics Championships in 1954 was held on August 28 and 29, 1954 in the Neufeld Stadium in Bern .
The European champion was the German Heinz Fütterer , who won his second gold medal at these European championships. Second place went to the 400-meter European champion Ardalion Ignatiev from the Soviet Union. Bronze went to the Briton George Ellis .

Comment on world and European
records : Since 1951, only those records have been recognized that were set on tracks with a full curve. The two Americans Jesse Owens (1935) and Mel Patton (1948) achieved 20.3 s on straight lanes . The European record holder on a straight track was the German Helmut Körnig with 20.9 s from 1928.
Record improvement
European champion Heinz Fütterer improved the existing European record and thus also the EM record twice:
- 21.1s - semi-finals on August 28th
- 20.9 s - final on August 29th
