The list of streets in Essen-Kray describes the street system in the Essen district of Kray with the corresponding historical references.

Introduction and overview

In Essen-Kray, 19897 inhabitants (March 31, 2020) live on an area of ​​4.17 km². Kray has the postcode areas 45307 and 45309.

On May 9, 1894, street naming was introduced in Kray by a resolution of the municipality. However, the inclusion of the original house numbering in the name system of the streets did not follow until November 1, 1898. The Nibelungen settlement was later created as a group of street names.

The district
boundary runs roughly as follows, starting clockwise in the north: Bonifaciusstrasse, Kappertsiepen Street, Teutoburger Weg, Portendieckstrasse, Vogelsangsberg Street, then north, east and south around Mechtenberg and on to Grimbergstrasse, Ottostrasse and Bundesautobahn 40 crossing to Munscheidstraße, bend to the west, crossing Rodenseelstraße , continue along the Essen - Bochum railway to Wattenscheider Straße, continue across the street Schreibzeile, crossing the Meistersingerstraße to the street Lohdieckweg, the street Zum Oberhof, the Steeler path, the Abtissinsteig and further over the railway line southwest around the industrial area Zeche Katharina, the street Am Zehnthof, the Autobahn 40 and the Hubertstraße crossing further west of the street Morgensteig to Bonifaciusstraße.

Franziska Christine von Pfalz-Sulzbach , Princess Abbess of Essen Nov 20, 1937 The Essen prince abbess Franziska Christine von Pfalz-Sulzbach often resided at the foot of the Knottenberg. Her final resting place is in the local orphanage . The abbess's path had several names in the past, partly and partly differently: in 1890 partly Knottenberg and Eickenscheider Weg , 1894 Knottenbergstraße , 1905 Moltkestraße (course in the neighboring district of Kray ), 1909 Stoppenberger Straße and finally in 1929 Am Knottenberg . Oberhof Eickenscheidt Nov 20, 1937 The naming was based on the Oberhof Eickenscheid, which was first mentioned in a document in 860. In 1332 it is noted in the chain book that 136 lower courtyards belonged to it, which did not extend to the Essen monastery but further into Westphalia. The last 119  acre farm was acquired from the Eickenscheidt heirs in 1927 by an interest group consisting of the municipality of Kray and Allbau .
The street on Krayer Flur was previously called Eickenscheidter Strasse . In the Frillendorfer Flur, the previously so-called Wisthoffstraße had been called Am Zehnthof since 1933.
The street Am Zehnthof leads from Krayer Straße in a westerly direction to Schönscheidtstraße and from there as part of the Landesstraße L 191, on to Frillendorf.

The son of the Councilor and Landreceptor Franz Jobst von Cocy, Franz Joseph von Cocy, was the last tenant on January 24, 1782. In the land register of 1668, Georg Bertelich and the 56-  acre farm are mentioned. The entire farmer Bartling and the Hofrat von Cocy as owners are named in 1795. In 1833 the Board of Directors of Cocy replaced the allodification interest, with the yard being 107 acres. The existing profit letters show that the Bartling family had a considerable right to use the farm. In 1857, the Bonifacius colliery began digging the first shaft in the area of ​​the courtyard . It was shut down in the 1980s.

Today Bonifaciusstraße leads from Fichtelstraße in a westerly direction to Schonnebeck , where it forms the boundary between the street Kappertsiepen and Joachimstraße. From there to the Schonnebeck area it was called Hellweg until 1936 .

Buderusstrasse 130 Buderus Iron Works, Wetzlar Nov 20, 1937 On May 23, 1919, the Buderus general assembly decided to merge the "Westdeutsche Eisenwerke Aktiengesellschaft" in Kray, which had previously been purchased and founded by Albert Eckenberg in 1898, with Buderus. As a tube foundry, the Krayer factory was in fourth place in Germany in 1914 and employed around 500 people. The Krayer plant came to a standstill under the direction of Buderus because of the invasion of French and Belgian troops during the occupation of the Ruhr in 1923. Dickstrasse 240 Henry Dick, mining engineer June 8, 1909 The mining engineer Henry Dick was born in 1832. From 1879 he headed the Bonifacius colliery . After this was transferred to Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG , he became its director in 1899 and a member of the supervisory board from 1908 until his death. He died in Berlin on December 6, 1915.

Ernststrasse 230 Friedrich Ernst Eickenscheidt, farmer 6 Sep 1897 Friedrich Ernst Eickenscheidt, called Fritz, was born on December 17, 1859 in Kray. Around 1900 he built several houses on newly developed streets in Kray, which were named after him and his siblings. Heinrich-Sense-Weg 670 Heinrich Sense, Steiger and local expert in Kray Nov 20, 1937 Heinrich Sense was born on January 28, 1831 in Kray.
