List of commercial computer games with published source code

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The games in this list of commercial computer games with published source code were originally developed as a commercial, proprietary software product and their source code later became available. The available source code enables the user communities to take over technical support ( bug fixes , compatibility adjustments to new hardware and operating systems ) themselves, e.g. B. with unofficial patches and porting to new operating systems. These source texts are published under various software licenses : free , semi-free , proprietary, commercial and non-commercial licenses. Artwork (e.g. graphics and audio) and the game data are mostly not released because, on the one hand, the copyright situation there is often even more complicated than with the source text or is deliberately left out in order to enable further commercial marketing via digital distribution , e.g. B. at Arx Fatalis .

Some of the first companies to release commercial game source code on a larger scale at the end of support include Id Software and 3D Realms ; they were pioneers for other developer companies. At the end of the commercial product life cycle ( end of life of these games), the source code was made available to the public or the user community instead of being abandoned . Many other developers then published the source code of individual game titles. As a surprising example, Microsoft can be seen as a game developer, usually not associated with open source , who has released at least two games in its company history.
