The Manchester Arena is a multi-purpose arena in the English city of Manchester , United Kingdom . The arena, which until 2004 was the venue for professional ice hockey and basketball teams , is now mainly used as a concert hall. It is located in the north of the city center, near Victoria train station and was owned by the Anschutz Entertainment Group , which also owns the Staples Center in Los Angeles and The O₂ in London .
history
The arena opened on July 15, 1995 under the name NYNEX Arena , named after a British cable TV operator. From 1998 to 2011 it was called the Manchester Evening News Arena, which emerges from a sponsorship agreement with the local daily Manchester Evening News . From 2011 to 2013 it was only called Manchester Arena. From 2013 to the beginning of 2015, the event arena was sponsored by the name Phones 4u Arena after the mobile communications company phones 4u. The contract has a term of five years. The contract was terminated in January 2015 and the hall was again called the Manchester Arena from January 14th of that year.
Originally the arena was built to support the city of Manchester's eventually failed Olympic applications in 1996 and 2000. In 1997, the attendance of the games Manchester Storm against Sheffield Steelers and Manchester Giants against London Leopards made a record for the highest attendance at an ice hockey and basketball game in the United Kingdom with a attendance of 17,425 and 14,151 respectively . The attendance between Manchester and Sheffield is still the highest in any ice hockey league match in England. In addition to Storm and the Giants, Manchester Phoenix from the English Premier Ice Hockey League played in the arena in the 2003/04 season, a third professional sports club, which, however, moved to a smaller stadium after a year due to a lack of audience income.
So far (as of October 2009) the Manchester Arena has been the arena with the world's largest total number of visitors to concerts and other events five times. In 2007, a total of 1,245,196 tickets were sold, making it the World's Busiest Arena in the Concerts category for the last time , closely followed by New York's Madison Square Garden and The O₂ in London .
In October 2013, the arena for 82.1 million was £ to the London-based real estate - Investment company Mansford Real Estate sold. In March 2018, the REIT acquired Plc , an investment company that arena with hotels, bars and other function rooms in the city for a total of 436 million £ (about 491 million € ) from the Mans Ford LLP .
Terrorist attack on May 22, 2017
Shortly after the end of a pop concert by the American singer Ariana Grande on May 22, 2017, there was an explosion in the foyer of the arena. It was triggered by a suicide bomber who detonated an explosive vest . The police classified this as an act of terrorism and said there were 23 fatalities and at least 59 injured. Grande herself was unharmed. Due to the attack, three Take That concerts , which were planned for May 25, 26 and 27, 2017 in the arena, were postponed indefinitely.
