overview

Small supporting roles and first leading role 1947–1952

Marilyn Monroe made her debut in the 1947 comedy Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! (1948), with an appearance lasting about four seconds. In Dangerous Years (1947), which came out before her debut film, she had a minor supporting role as a waitress. This was followed by a leading role as a revue girl and singer in the inexpensive B-movie I dance in your heart (1948) and a much-noticed brief appearance in the comedy Love Happy (1949) alongside Groucho Marx . In John Huston's film noir Asphalt-Jungle (1950), which she considered to be one of her best all her life, she was able to show her acting talent for the first time. In the Oscar- winning tragicomedy Alles über Eva (1950) with Bette Davis , she had a small but not unimportant supporting role as an ambitious young actress who was made for her. She was hired by the studios for many of her early films primarily because of her beauty and charisma, often for small supporting roles as an attractive secretary. However, her screen presence was also notable in the supporting roles. In Love Nest (1951) in particular , she attracted attention as a seductive rival to June Haver . An exception was Fritz Lang's milieu study Before the New Day (1952), in which she portrayed a self-confident young worker. In We Are Not Married at All (1952) she had a small role as a budding beauty queen. Her first leading role in a major production followed with the drama Temptation on 809 (1952) with Richard Widmark . Director Roy Baker always used the first take of each scene. Despite little experience in the dramatic subject, she was able to convince in the character role of a psychopathic nanny. This was followed by a cameo as a street girl in the episode film Five Pearls (1952) and another comical supporting role as an attractive secretary in Liebling, I'm Getting Younger (1952) alongside Cary Grant .

Breakthrough with thrillers, comedies and music films 1953–1955

In Niagara (1953) Monroe played her second leading role in a large production. Henry Hathaway staged the thriller in the style of film noir and impressively staged her erotic charisma as femme fatale . The character role was a milestone in her career and made her an international film star . In the years that followed, 20th Century Fox pegged her to the naive, lascivious blonde type. In the burlesque musical comedy Blondes Preferred (1953), she and Jane Russell played two show girls, and she sang several well-known songs; in the comedy How do you fish for a millionaire? (1953) with Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall , she was seen as a myopic model. She convinced with her talent as a comedian and singer and became the biggest star in Hollywood . In River of No Return (1954) she played her only leading role in a western alongside Robert Mitchum . Regarding Otto Preminger's directorial work, she commented critically that the landscape shots in Cinemascope are more important than the art of acting. She only took on a new role as a showgirl in the musical rhythm in the blood (1954) because Fox Studios promised her the lead role as "The Girl" in Billy Wilder's comedy The 7th Year Itch (1955), a brilliant role. which she played with an ironic undertone. The scene in which her dress is blown up over a subway shaft became legendary. The films were very successful and are now classics.

More demanding roles and most successful comedy 1956–1962

After studying acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in New York , she insisted on more demanding roles. She received good reviews for her portrayal of a moderately talented nightclub singer in Joshua Logan's Bus Stop (1956), the adaptation of a play. For her role in The Prince and the Dancer (1957) she was awarded a David di Donatello and an Étoile de Cristal . The comedy was realized by her film production company, Laurence Olivier played the second lead role and also directed. She had her greatest success in her typical role as a naive, lascivious blonde. For Wilders Some Like It Hot (1959) with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis she was honored with a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical and came second at the Laurel Awards . The film is now considered the best American comedy of all time. George Cukor's comedy Let's do it in love (1960) with Yves Montand was not a commercial success , despite funny plots and good reviews. With Misfits - not socially acceptable (1961), based on the script of her husband Arthur Miller , she made the longed-for change to the character subject. At the side of Clark Gable she played an outsider who is disappointed by her fellow men. The western drama was directed by John Huston , who is one of the most influential filmmakers in American cinema. Her performance received critical acclaim; financially, however, the film was a failure due to the depressive mood. Something's Got to Give (1962) remained unfinished because Marilyn Monroe passed away before filming was finished.
