Michelbach is a market town with 893 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Sankt Pölten-Land in Lower Austria .
geography
Michelbach is located in the mountainous region of the Mostviertel, southeast of St. Pölten in Lower Austria. The area of the market town covers 24.95 square kilometers. 46.94 percent of the area is forested.

The community consists of the cadastral communities Mayerhöfen, Michelbach Dorf and Michelbach Markt.
history
In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . The place was first mentioned as Michilpach in 1124 . In a document from Bishop Reginmar von Passau , Michelbach is removed from the Pyhra parish association and raised to the status of an independent parish. In 1510 Michelbach came into the possession of the von Greiß lords , under whom the town was reformed . The Catholic parish was no longer occupied and was again taken care of from Pyhra. A large part of the village was devastated during the first Turkish siege of Vienna , only seven of 59 courtyards were spared. In 1541, Michelbach was hit by the plague . There were further epidemics in 1574 and 1583. The many victims that the disease claimed were absent in agriculture and brought many landowners and farmers into great hardship. During the second Turkish siege , 274 people from Michelbach lost their lives. The parish church was razed to the ground. The survivors built a new church from 1708. From 1710 new people settled in the depopulated Vienna Woods region and began to rebuild the villages. In 1787 conscription numbers were assigned to the individual houses. As if by a miracle, Michelbach survived the Napoleonic Wars unscathed. In 1921, a flood caused great damage in Michelbach. 72 soldiers from Michelbach did not return home in 1945 after the Second World War .
Population development
According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 921 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 835 inhabitants, in 1981 793 and in 1971 754 inhabitants.

- Charcoal burning
There is a charcoal burning plant on the road between Michelbach and Stollberg . It is one of the last of the “black trade”, which used to be found in large numbers in the Vienna Woods. At the charcoal factory, wood from the Vienna Woods is processed into charcoal.
