Messier 91 (also known as NGC 4548 ) is a 10.1 mag bright bar- spiral galaxy with an area of 5.2 '× 4.2' in the constellation Haar der Berenike . Distance measurements with the help of variable stars of the Cepheid class showed a distance to the Milky Way of about 20 million light years. The diameter is around 83,000 light years, the total mass is given as around 100 billion solar masses .

Messier 91 was discovered on April 8, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel . The assignment of NGC 4548 to object number 91 from the Messier catalog has long been controversial, as Messier incorrectly stated the coordinates in his records relative to Messier 58 , but probably meant Messier 89 .
