Mosquera is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia , which for metropolitan Bogotá belongs.

geography

Mosquera is located in the province of Sabana Occidental in Cundinamarca , in the immediate vicinity of Eldorado Airport in Bogotá (10 km). It is around 20 km as the crow flies to the center of the capital. Mosquera is at an altitude of 2516  m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature between 12 and 14 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Funza , in the east on Bogotá (districts Fontibón , Kennedy and Bosa ), in the south on Soacha and in the west on Bojacá and Madrid .

history

Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera

Before the arrival of the Spaniards the area now Mosquera was the indigenous people of the Muisca inhabited. The region was conquered by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada . Administratively, Mosquera initially belonged to Funza . The city was founded in 1861 in honor of the Colombian President Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera on the site of the village of Cuatro Esquinas and raised directly to the status of a municipality.

economy

Traditionally, agriculture and cattle production are Mosquera's main industries. In particular, spinach , cauliflower , lettuce , carrots , celery , garlic , potatoes and peas are grown, as well as, to a lesser extent, ornamental plants . Due to the proximity to Bogotá, a lot of industry has settled, which is now the largest employer in the municipality.
