Location and economy

The municipality is located west of Hilversum and southeast of Amsterdam . The main sources of income are agriculture and tourism.

Attractions

The community is very popular with nature and water sports enthusiasts. At Loosdrecht there are the lakes " Loosdrechtsche Plassen ", where there is a lot of sailing. In summer there are many events for tourists, including a. an evening gondola ride and some sailing regattas. There are also lakes at Ankeveen, the “Ankeveense Plassen”; these are largely bird sanctuary and not accessible to tourists. All of these lakes in this fen area were created in the 17th to 19th centuries through peat extraction .

'S-Graveland is home to a number of country estates built by wealthy Dutchmen in the 17th and 18th centuries. The most famous of these are “Trompenburgh”, which belonged to the Tromp family, and “Schaep en Burgh”, where the Dutch nature conservation organization “Natuurmonumenten” (natural monuments) is based. The parks and forests of these country estates are beautifully situated in the transition zone between the sandy geest soils of the “ Het Gooi ” region and the boggy, deep polderland between Amsterdam and Utrecht . As a result, this area has a high natural value, even though the forest areas were created through human intervention.

In Loosdrecht you can find Sijpesteyn Castle, which was built in 1911 according to a medieval plan and can be visited from time to time. It houses an interesting collection of paintings and porcelain from the local porcelain factory from the second half of the 18th century.

Nederhorst den Berg has an old castle in the village, Nederhorst. It was built in the 13th century, destroyed several times and completely renovated in the 17th century. After a major fire in 1971, the castle was rebuilt as an office and film studio, i.e. closed to tourists.

's-Graveland is a picturesque village with a canal running through its center. This also applies to Kortenhoef, where painters practiced their art from 1870 onwards.
