Neu Darchau is a municipality in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in Lower Saxony . It is part of the Elbtalaue community .

location

Neu Darchau is located on the left bank of the Elbe , around 15 km downstream from Hitzacker and 12 km upstream from Bleckede . The place is about 35 km east of Lüneburg . Directly opposite Neu Darchau, on the right bank of the Elbe, lies the village of Darchau (municipality of Amt Neuhaus , district of Lüneburg ).

The municipality is located in the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park , partly also in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve . The Mühlenbach flows through the community and flows into the Elbe at the edge of the village.

history

During the division of Germany , Neu Darchau was in the border area, as the Elbe formed the border between Lower Saxony and the GDR ( Schwerin district ). The Neuhaus office, including the sister community in Darchau, was located behind the “ Iron Curtain ” on the other bank of the river.

The municipality of Neu-Darchau has existed since the municipal reform of 1972 from the following nine districts. The Darzauer Mühle residential area also exists.

Before 1972 Darzauer Mühle belonged to the municipality of Darzau. The municipality of Katemin was incorporated from the Lüneburg district into the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in 1972 .

The six districts of Katemin, Neu Darchau, Klein Kühren, Schutschur, Glienitz and Drethem, located directly on the Elbe, have more or less completely grown together today. The first three merge directly into one another; the others are separated from each other by only a few 100 m long sections.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, the communities of Darzau, Drethem, Glienitz, Katemin (until then in the district of Lüneburg ), Klein Kühren, Quarstedt, Sammatz and Schutschur were incorporated.

St. Petri

The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Neu Darchau has its parish seat in Nau Darchau and shares the parish with the parish of Hitzacker. The parish includes the churches of St. Petri in Neu Darchau, the church in Drethem and the half-timbered chapel in Wietzetze .

Economy and Infrastructure

The water mill is located in the center of the village by the bridge on the main road over the Mühlenbach. There is a sports boat harbor at the mouth of the Mühlbach . In addition to a shop for supplies for daily necessities, there are also doctors in the village. Furthermore, the place has a primary school with a school sports hall, a kindergarten and a sports field called "Elbufer Arena", on which, among other things, the football club "SV Elbufer" is at home.

The Elbuferstraße runs through the village as a tourist route. The nearest train station is in Breese ( Nahrendorf municipality ), 8 km south. In Göhrde and Dahlenburg there is a connection to the B 216 from Lüneburg to Dannenberg .

The "Tanja" car ferry operates all year round between Neu Darchau and Darchau, on the right bank of the Elbe . The construction of a bridge is planned, especially to better connect the Neuhaus office to the district town of Lüneburg . However, several planning attempts have already been stopped by the courts, or could not even be tackled due to conflicts with the EU's FFH guidelines . In the Lüchow-Dannenberg district, especially in Neu Darchau itself, the plan to build a bridge over the Elbe has met with criticism, as there is fear of a strong increase in through traffic. In July, the Lüneburg district council decided to cancel the planning, as a new cost calculation resulted in construction costs of 58 million euros, of which the district would have had to bear 22.25 million euros.
