New admission to the UNESCO cultural and natural heritage in 1979

In 1979 the following new admissions to the UNESCO cultural and natural heritage took place:

World heritage

At its third meeting from October 22 to 16, 1979 in Cairo and Luxor , Egypt , the World Heritage Committee added 45 sites from 18 countries to the UNESCO World Heritage List, including 34 cultural (K), ten natural (N ) and a mixed cultural and natural heritage site (K / N). For the first time, a cross-border World Heritage site was designated and another was placed on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger (R) .

(a)With the expansion to include extensive forest areas in Belarus in 1992, this natural heritage became the cross-border world heritage “Bialowieza Forest”.
(b) Since the expansion in 2010, the “Ngorongoro Conservation Area” has also been recognized under cultural criteria.
(c) Republic of Zaire was the name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo until 1997
(d) The world heritage sites registered for the federal state of Yugoslavia have been transferred to the former republics as successor states.
(e) The Ohrid Lake was initially only registered as a natural heritage, only through the expansion in the following year did the mixed cultural and natural heritage of the Ohrid region arise.

Red List

The Bay of Kotor was placed on the Red List at the request of the State Party of Yugoslavia. The Kotor region was badly affected by an earthquake in 1979.
