New Brunswick (in German: Neubraunschweig ) is a city in Middlesex County , New Jersey , USA . In the 2010 census , a population of 55,181 was registered.

Rutgers University is in the city . It is also the headquarters of the large consumer goods manufacturer Johnson & Johnson .

history

Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape indigenous people, Brunswick was founded in the 17th century by early European immigrants; the place is named after the Low German name of the city of Braunschweig .

With its central location between New York City and Philadelphia and its location on the Raritan River , Brunswick quickly became an important hub for travelers and traders. The Raritan and Delaware Canal was a navigable canal connection with Bordentown on the Delaware River from 1834 to 1932 .
