Four fencing competitions were held at the IV Olympic Games in London in 1908 . The venue was a tent on the Franco-British Exhibition site near the White City Stadium , which had been set up to protect against bad weather.

In contrast to the earlier events, there were only competitions with epee and saber , but not with foil . In the opinion of the organizers, the rules of this discipline had developed so differently in the individual countries that international competitions were not possible. A decision based solely on the number of hits would have been degrading the sport. Instead, a demonstration competition was held in the Prince's Galleries on Piccadilly without a rating.

In the first round on July 17th and 18th, four to seven participants met in 13 groups. The then remaining 38 fencers formed eight groups with four or five participants in the second round on July 20th. The first two of a group qualified for the semifinals on July 23rd. A team could consist of five fencers, but only four could be used per international match. In the final on July 23, Hungary beat Bohemia 9: 7. Here, too, the decision about second place was not made until July 24th: The Bohemians, who lost in the final, refused to compete again, which is why the silver medal went to Italy.
