Summary
The Czech world champion and world record holder Tomáš Dvořák was the favorite . The Estonian European Champion Erki Nool was seen as the strongest opponent . Other promising candidates were the British Vice World Champion Dean Macey and the World Cup third Chris Huffins from the USA. Although the German silver medalist Frank Busemann started in Atlanta in 1996 , he had to fight injuries beforehand, so that he was not given a medal chance.
The first discipline, the 100-meter run , was dominated by Huffins. With his time of 10.48 s he was able to take the top position with a 47 point lead over Nool.
Macey was the best long jumper . At 7.77 m, he jumped an inch farther than Nool, whose performance was two inches better than Huffins'. With that, Nool came close to the US athlete on 34 points. Macey was 28 points behind Nool in third. Another 54 points behind followed Busemann in fourth place, eight points ahead of the Czech Roman Šebrle. Dvořák was sixth. So the gaps were still very close.
In the shot put Dvořák improved to fourth place with 15.91 m. Huffins maintained his lead, Nool had lost another ten points to him. Macey was still third, 48 points behind Nool and 19 in front of Dvořák. Šebrle had ousted Busemann to sixth place.
With 2.21 m the American Tom Pappas achieved the best result in the high jump . Huffins stayed ahead, Pappas had advanced to second and was 62 points behind his compatriot. Šebrle, who had reached the second-best height with 2.12 m, followed 37 points behind Pappas in third before Macey, who was only three more points behind. Nool was fifth, now 128 points behind Huffins. Busemann was sixth, Dvořák seventh.
The last discipline of the first day was the 400-meter run , in which Macey ran the fastest time with 46.41 s. Huffins was still at the top, but his lead had shrunk. Macey was only eight points behind the US athlete and 41 points ahead of Nool. Pappas had dropped to fourth place, 29 points behind the Estonians. Šebrle fell back to fifth, Busemann and Dvořák held their positions.
The gaps at the end of the first day were still very close. There were less than a hundred points between first and fifth place. The level of competition was extremely high up to then.
Šebrle was the best hurdler , setting the fastest time with 13.87 s. He and Huffins (13.91 s) were the only runners who finished under 14 seconds. Huffins was able to extend his lead again. He was now 87 points ahead of Macey, who in turn was only two points ahead of Šebrle. Pappas followed 20 points back in fourth place, Nool another 13 points behind in fifth in front of Busemann and Dvořák.
49.55 m was the record that was achieved in the discus throw by Huffins. He extended his lead further and was 196 points ahead of second-placed Šebrle. It was followed by Macey (215 points back), Nool (244 points back) and Pappas (275 points back). Busemann had dropped to ninth place. In this seventh discipline, the gaps increased significantly and it looked very good, especially for Huffins at the top.
The Danish Henrik Dagård and the German Mike Maczey were the best pole vaulters . Both reached a height of 5.10 m. Nool had pushed past Šebrle and Macey into second place. He shortened his deficit on Huffins to 153 points. Nool was 13 points ahead of Šebrle and 32 points ahead of Macey.
In the javelin throw Dvořák achieved the greatest distance with 69.94 m. Nool came up to 14 points on Huffins, Šebrle up to 57. Macey, Pappas, Dvořák and Busemann followed in seventh place. The larger gaps between Huffins and his opponents after the seventh discipline had shrunk again and the race for Olympic gold was open again.
The starting position before the final competition, the 1500 meter run , was such that Huffins could not run more than two seconds slower than Nool in order to be able to keep the lead. Šebrle had to be nine seconds faster than Huffins and six seconds faster than Nool to become an Olympic champion. The two scheduled races were put together according to the previous placements, so that the competitors who were close together had an eye on each other and did not have to align their races to any time specifications.
The American Kip Janvrin was the fastest 1500 meter runner in the field. In the first run he achieved 4: 17.81 minutes. Roman Šebrle crossed the finish line in 4: 28.79 minutes in the second race, in which the best placed athletes started. Since Huffins needed 4: 38.71 minutes, the Czech passed the US athlete and won silver, while Chris Huffins got the bronze medal. Erki Nool scored 4: 29.48 minutes and was Olympic champion with a 35 point lead. Dean Macey was just 28 points behind Huffins fourth, Tom Pappas was fifth. Tomáš Dvořák finished sixth, Frank Busemann seventh.
Overall, the performance of the second day lagged significantly behind that of the first, so that the points achieved in the end were slightly lower than perhaps expected after the half of the competition. The gaps, especially from first to fourth, between which there were less than a hundred points, were very close overall.
Erki Nool was the first Estonian Olympic champion in athletics.

Olympic champion Erki Nool from Estonia
Silver medalist Roman Šebrle, Czech Republic
