With this third gold medal, Eric Heiden set the record for Ard Schenk ( Sapporo 1972 ) - and at this point in time the experts were already expecting further gold medals for the athlete from Wisconsin .
He had already run in the first heat, his opponent was Gaétan Boucher, who owed his silver medal to the fact that he “was dragged along by Heiden”.

Heiden's fourth gold medal was in jeopardy because he was briefly in danger of falling, but he still almost came close to his world record. Stenshjemmet was his running opponent, and the Norwegian won the silver medal in the wake of Heiden. At minus 1 degree Celsius the ice conditions were good and lasted until the last pair of 38 competitors from 16 countries.

Heiden not only won his fifth gold, he also won a world record - making him the most successful participant in the Winter Games (this was Lidija Skoblikowa with her four gold medals at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck ). In the first pairing of this final competition, Heiden met the previous world record holder Viktor Lyoskin (14: 34.33 on April 3, 1977 in Medeo ), who was able to harass him up to three laps before the end, but was then distanced.

The competition ended with a huge surprise - on the one hand the double victory for the Netherlands and on the other hand the severe defeat for the URS. Petrusjowa seemed to be heading towards a sure win in the third pair against Visser, but in the finish Visser pulled away ( Tatyana Averina and Vira Bryndzei as the next best in 2: 16.32 ex aequo in 18th place). In the fifth heat the decision for gold was made, in which outsider Borckink triumphed with a new Olympic record.

Eric Heiden's sister Beth won bronze at the distance where she was given the least chance. She was Jensen's opponent, who was described as the surprise winner - and the Norwegian had even been on a world record course for a long time (4: 31.0 by Galina Stepanskaja , URS). The highly rated URS runners ended up in the defeated field. 1,500m silver medalist Ria Visser fell after 800m. Runners with higher start numbers were at a disadvantage, as the ice became more and more dull under the influence of heat.
