Olympic Winter Games 2018 / Ice Hockey (Women) / Qualification
The qualification for the 2018 Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Tournament took place between October 2016 and February 2017. Two places in the final tournament were played. There were also the five best nations in the IIHF world rankings in 2016 and South Korea as the host.
The two places were played in a multi-level system between 22 participants. The classification was also based on the 2016 IIHF world rankings. In the last qualifying round, Switzerland and Japan secured the remaining two free places in the Olympic ice hockey tournament.

The national teams from 6th place in the world rankings played the two remaining places in a multi-stage system in qualifying tournaments between October 2016 and February 2017. A total of 22 countries registered for the seven tournaments.
After the pre-qualification (group J), whose group winners qualified for the first round, the other seven teams played in the world rankings 18 to 27 (hosts South Korea were automatically qualified, Croatia and North Korea did not participate) each in two groups of four (G & H) the two group winners. The winners of the first qualifying round and the six national teams in the world rankings 12 to 17 met in the second qualifying round in two groups (E & F) of four teams. Only the two group winners reached the third qualifying round, in which they met the six teams that finished 6th to 11th in the world rankings. There was again played in two groups (C & D) with four teams each. The respective group winners finally qualified for the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
The International Ice Hockey Federation formed a ranking among the non-qualified nations that was also included in the IIHF world rankings in 2018.

A pre-qualification tournament took place in October 2016. The three registered teams with the lowest world rankings took part and determined the eighth participant in the first qualifying round. The host of the pre-qualification was the highest ranked of the eligible teams in the world rankings. The host of the tournament was the Mexican Federation. The winner of the pre-qualification tournament was the team from Mexico, which qualified for the qualifying tournament of group G.

First qualifying round
In November 2016, the two qualifying tournaments of the first round were played. The seven registered teams from 18th place in the world rankings after the end of the 2016 World Cup as well as Mexico, the winner from the pre-qualification, took part. The first qualifying round was played in two groups. Kazakhstan and Spain acted as hosts. The winners of the first qualifying round were the teams from Kazakhstan and Italy, who were therefore allowed to take part in the qualifying tournament in groups E & F.

The group C games of the third qualifying round took place from February 9 to 12, 2017 in the sports and congress center in the Swiss holiday and recreation resort of Arosa . After the hosts Switzerland and the Czech Republic had won their first two games, the last game of the two teams in front of over 1,300 spectators had to decide whether they would reach the Winter Olympics. Switzerland prevailed with a 4-1 victory.
