Liivi (German Parmel or Alt-Parmel ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Lääne-Nigula (until 2017: rural municipality Kullamaa ) in Lääne County in Estonia .

Population and location

The place has 123 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the Liivi River ( Liivi jõgi ), forty kilometers from the county capital, Haapsalu .

history

In 1389 the Parmel manor was exchanged for a certain Hincke Live (Lieven). It was considered an ancestral property of the Parmel family . Until 1694 the farm remained in the possession of the noble Lieven family , from which the current Estonian name of the village is derived. In 1798 the area is mentioned as Hof Parmel.

During the Middle Ages, a small fortress was probably the center of the estate. The single-storey wooden mansion was built in the mid-19th century. It has been partially preserved with some renovations and extensions. The building is surrounded by a spacious park of more than four hectares with a four hundred meter long avenue .

Most of the Hofland was sold in 1910. The remains of the private estate, which was owned by the noble Baltic German family Ungern-Sternberg , were expropriated in 1919 as part of the Estonian land reform .

The Liivi schoolhouse, which was housed in the estate's former schnapps distillery until it was closed in 2005 , gained historical importance during the Second World War . Large collections of books from the Tartu University Library had been relocated there.

A small exhibition on the history of the place has been on view in the Liivi library since 2005. A memorial stone near the river today commemorates the first documented owner of the place. It bears the inscription ADM Hinke Live 1389 .
