The Polish team championship in chess in 1949 was the sixth staging of this competition and at the same time the first that was carried out with club teams. A total of 24 teams took part, twelve of which qualified for the finals. The Polish team champion was AZS Gliwice with a half point lead over the team from ZS Ogniwo-Cracovia Kraków, which had to give up one game in the last five rounds without a fight.
The 24 participating teams were divided into four preliminary groups (North, Silesia, Central, South) from which the first two qualified for the final round; in addition, four teams received a free place in the final round. A simple round-robin tournament was played on six boards both in the preliminary rounds and in the final round . The number of points on the board (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point for a draw, no point) decided the placement for defeat). The first two of the finals were directly qualified for the finals of the team championship 1950/51.
Dates and venue
The north preliminary round was played in Gdańsk from June 16 to 19 , the Silesia preliminary round from June 26 to 29 in Wrocław , the middle preliminary round from June 28 to July 1 in Warsaw and the south preliminary round from June 4 to 11 July in Krynica-Zdrój . The final round was held in Szczecin from October 30th to November 5th .
