history

Coat of arms of the royal capital Prague

On February 12, 1784, the four independent cities of Old Town, New Town, Lesser Town and Hradschin were united by a decree of Joseph II to form the royal capital Prague ( Královské hlavní město Praha ). This resulted in four districts, which were designated with Roman numerals (I-IV). The Josephstadt (Josefov) was annexed in 1850 as the fifth (5th) district. Notwithstanding numerous subsequent expansions of the urban area, this state remained until 1949, in which a comprehensive reorganization was carried out. The old town, the Lesser Town and the Josephstadt, part of the Hradschin and Holešovices were combined to form the new Prague 1 district . After a new reform in 1960, the district got its present shape.

The district is roughly congruent with the medieval core of the city, which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . For this reason, the city's most famous tourist destinations such as Prague Castle , Charles Bridge , Old Town Square and many others are located here .
