Rainer Schmidt (born August 1, 1948 in Langewiesen ) is a former German ski jumper .
Career
Schmidt won the jumping at the youth Spartakiad in 1966 . After he had to pause for a while due to an injury, he was only accepted into the GDR national squad in 1968. At the GDR ski championships in 1968 in Oberhof , he and the team secured the silver medal. Schmidt finished his first Four Hills Tournament in 1968/69 in 25th place in the overall tournament standings.
At the GDR ski championships in 1969 in Oberwiesenthal , he and the team won the title and thus the gold medal. In the Four Hills Tournament 1969/70 Schmidt was able to improve significantly compared to the previous year. He jumped to a good 14th place twice in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen , before surprising in sixth on the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck . In Bischofshofen he was on the podium for the first time after finishing second on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze .
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970 in Štrbské Pleso he jumped from the large hill with jumps on 84 and 98.5 meters to 28th place. After jumps of 77 and 76 meters on the normal hill, he finished 20th on points with Karel Kodejška . At the GDR Ski Championships in 1970 in Brotterode , he just missed a medal in fourth on the normal hill and sixth on the large hill. In the Four Hills Tournament 1970/71 he did not start in the GDR team. He only returned to the national team for the Four Hills Tournament in 1971/72 and jumped on the podium again in second place at the opening competition in Innsbruck. However, he was unable to repeat this performance in the following competitions and thereupon ended the tour only in 16th place overall. Even before the tour he had won his first GDR championship title from the large hill at the GDR ski championships in 1971 in Johanngeorgenstadt . He also won silver on the normal hill.
At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he won the bronze medal on the large hill. He had only jumped 15th on the normal hill before. With the following Four Hills Tournament 1972/73 he denied his most successful tour. He won the jumping competitions in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was second on the podium in Innsbruck. After a 12th place in Bischofshofen, he finally took first place in the tour's overall ranking.
Schmidt was unable to build on this success. At the GDR ski championships in 1973 in Schmiedefeld , he missed another medal with two fourth places.
At the ski flying world championships in 1975 Schmidt secured the silver medal again. In 1976 he finally ended his active ski jumping career after he did not get a starting place at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .
Today Schmidt works as a successful regional and junior trainer in Oberhof.
