The third season of the German crime series SOKO Leipzig celebrated its premiere on September 25, 2002 on ZDF . The finale was broadcast on March 28, 2003.

The first six episodes of the season premiered on Wednesdays on the 6:05 pm slot. As the audience ratings, as in the first two seasons, reached a consistently high level, the first broadcast of the remaining episodes was moved to the Friday 9:15 pm slot.

Leni Trautzschke, daughter of Chief Detective Trautzscke, is harassed by a stalker. When she wants to meet her friend Matti, he is pushed in front of the bus. The SOKO believes in a perpetrator from Leni's professional environment and smuggles Chief Detective Zimmeramm undercover into their newspaper editorial office. But when the stalker plans an assassination attempt on chief detective Trautzschke, the SOKO has to react quickly.

The painter Maxim Leutner is slain. He had mixed up the vernissage of his former lover the previous evening. But the investigators do not find any traces at the crime scene that could lead to the murderer. The daughter of the fruit trader Klausner, Anne Klausner, has been missing for three days. The SOKO investigators are at a loss, but when the clairvoyant Maximilian commissioned by Anne's father leads her to the location of the young woman's corpse during a seance, the deadlocked research regains momentum. For chief detective Trautzschke, the clairvoyant, who seems to have knowledge of the perpetrator, is suspect. However, Anne's friend Lutz Pfeiffer and her ex-fiance Harry Markowski also come under suspicion. When Jan, as a client of the clairvoyant, discovers the secret of his knowledge of the crime, the case takes an unexpected turn.

The insurance broker Ingo Buschmann is shot dead in his apartment. The shot came from the neighboring demolished house. Buschmann does not seem to have been particularly popular among his employees and not necessarily loyal to his wife. The suspicion falls on one of his former employees, who sent him death threats after his release. But the husband of his affair also seems to have a strong motive and the homeless Maxe is keeping something from the investigators.

Claudia Hellberg is knocked down in a motorway parking lot near the airport. As the investigators approach, forensic doctor Dr. Sandra Schönfeld states that the victim is not dead, only lifeless. It turns out that Claudia Hellberg, now in a coma, was on her way to the concert of the young pianist Clemens Gröning with a bouquet of flowers. When questioned, he stated that he did not know the woman. Another lead leads the investigators to Thomas Brinkmann, the owner of an almost insolvent Leipzig publishing house. He can give the SOKO the information about the victim's secret: Claudia Hellberg is the mother of Clemens Gröning, but in the summer of 1989 she fled the GDR via Hungary without her son. When she wakes up from the coma, she can't remember anything, but Chief Detective Trautzschke is sure that she knows more than she wants to say.

The rich Kurt Schwennstedt returns to Leipzig after more than 60 years to reconcile with his childhood friend Heinrich Hartung at the grave of their mutual love Mathilde. But a little later Hartung is dead. The SOKO investigators find out that practically everyone who accompanied Schwennstedt, who now lives in Sweden, has a motive to prevent the reconciliation. Because Schwennstedt had the plan to return an art collection stolen from Leipzig to Hartung before his disappearance. When the dead’s granddaughter, Verena, reveals Schwennstedt’s lie to the chief detective Maybach and Zimmermann, he, too, comes under suspicion. But chief detective Trautzschke doubts his guilt and the case takes a surprising turn.

Dr. Holger Zerban is shot with his own gun. Zerban, who leads a double life, stood between his wife, with whom he spent the weekends, and his lover Milena Buresch, the daughter of his boss, with whom he lived on weekdays. The commissioners find out that Zerban's double life was exposed and that Milena Buresch is expecting a child from him. Investigators are puzzled as both women claim that he chose them. But his boss Martin Buresch was anything but enthusiastic about the relationship with his daughter.

Anita Krug's body is found in a hotel. Husband Bernd Krug, who followed his wife into the hotel, and businessman Thomas Gerhardt, who fled the hotel's underground car park shortly after the murder, come under the spotlight of the investigation. But neither of the two claims to have been in the hotel room of the dead. Since Anita Krug already went in and out of the hotel during the trade fairs in Leipzig during the GDR era, it turns out that Gerhardt and the dead woman were having an affair. Chief Detective Trautzschke believes in a Stasi operation in the hotel, as West German guests often stay there during the trade fairs. Anita Krug's girlfriend, and also former trade fair hostess, Tanja Piper, could help with the investigation. But she is silent and is in mortal danger.

After a performance by the chansonette Babette Bischoff, who was also visited by Chief Detective Trautzschke and his daughter Leni, the artist was murdered in her apartment. It turns out that Berthold had joined a right-wing, criminal group and the marriage between Babette and Marcello has been arranged.

Otto von Saalfeld, a building contractor, has disappeared. The team around Head of Detective Superintendent Maybach, who takes on vacation replacement for Detective Superintendent Trautzschke, takes over the case and finds the body of the missing person in the trunk of his luxury limousine. Farmer Ingo Böhme, who accuses Saalfeld of arson, is suspected, but his wife Corinna von Saalfeld is also under suspicion, because she is accused by her dead husband's brother. When she is then murdered, Jan Maybach is able to save her and suspicion falls on her brother-in-law, who may have hired his chauffeur for this murder. Meanwhile, a forbidden affair develops between the chief detective and Corinna von Saalfeld.

While repairing a burst water pipe, construction workers find a human skeleton in the road foundation. It is the missing building contractor Egon Scherer. While it was previously suspected that he fled abroad years ago because of his debts, it now turns out that he was murdered. His wife Verena, his brother Walter and his former business partner Otto Holst each have a motif. The SOKO now has to understand Scherer's last days. Then a second murder happens unexpectedly.

The brother of the blind Lissy Lahnfeldt is murdered. During the investigation, Detective Superintendent Alvarez and the dead man's sister come closer to each other. Investigators find out that the dead journalist was responsible for the operation of the paraplegic Tina Gerdes by Dr. Schagen had started. However, young Tina's friend seems to be skeptical about the whole thing, and it also turns out that Lahnfeldt is a patient of Dr. Hauffe was. Chief Inspector Trautzschke and Inspector Alvarez are on their way home when they are called to work. The Kronen pharmacy was broken into and the pharmacist Renate Menzel was murdered. While pursuing two suspects, Trautzschke breaks his leg and Chief Detective Maybach takes over the management of the SOKO. During his sick leave, Trautzschke finds accommodation in his daughter Leni's apartment. From his window he observes a supposed murder in the neighboring house, but a corpse cannot be found. The SOKO investigators question the credibility of their boss because he took pain killers. However, he sticks to the story and his physiotherapist Eleonore sets off on her own to the apartment where the murder is said to have taken place. Her life is in danger.

Herbert Kochler appears in the SOKO office and confesses to a murder, but Chief Detective Trautzschke sends him home again. When they want to look for the missing person in the official's apartment, they find him dead. When the only witness, Ms. Zanger, is intimidated and refuses to testify, a power struggle develops between the lawyer and the SOKO boss.
