Since its foundation until today, the ÖVP Salzburg has been one of the strongest parties in the state and provided the governor from the first governor, Adolf Schemel (1945), to Franz Schausberger (2004). Even in the majority of the municipalities, "black" mayors still rule to this day. Richard Hildmann (CS / ÖVP) was mayor of the city of Salzburg from 1935 to 1938 and 1945/46, and ÖVP mayor Josef Dechant ruled the city of Salzburg from 1992 to 1999 . In 2017 Harald Preuner (ÖVP) was elected mayor.

In the 2004 state elections , the ÖVP lost the majority in the state parliament to the SPÖ for the first time . In the state elections in 2009 it was able to reduce the difference to the SPÖ, but it itself achieved the worst result of the post-war period. The relative majority they won only at the state election in 2013 returned.
