Schigalowo ( Russian Жига́лово ) is an urban-type settlement in the Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 5369 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is about 300 km as the crow flies north-northeast of the Irkutsk Oblast Administrative Center west of the Baikal Mountains on the left bank of the Lena , a little below the confluence of the right tributary Tutura .

Zhigalovo is the administrative center of the Rajons Schigalowski and is the seat and only town in the municipality Schigalowskoje gorodskoje posselenije.

history

The village of Schigalowo was founded in 1723 and named after its founder Jakow Schigalow. It remained relatively insignificant until the 20th century. On January 5, 1925, Schigalowo became the seat of a Volost , on July 28, 1926 a Rajons named after him. Shigalowo has had the status of an urban-type settlement since 1936.

Schigalowo is the end point of the 380 km long regional road 25N-013 (formerly R418), which comes from Irkutsk via Ust-Ordynski and reaches the Lena just above the neighboring district of Katschug to the south and descends mainly on the right bank via Verkholensk. The settlement is reached from the south-west by the 270 km long 25N-009 (formerly R420), which branches off the federal highway R255 Sibir (formerly M53) at Salari and runs through Balagansk . The 25N-008 runs from Zhigalovo to the northeast, and after 280 km it reaches the Ust-Kut  - Novy Uoyan road (on the territory of Irkutsk Oblast as 25K-026) following the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) .

There is an airport ( ICAO code UIIV ) on the eastern edge of the settlement , which has not been served regularly since the 1990s. Schigalowo has a dock on the Lena, which is navigable for smaller vehicles on the Katschug - Ust-Kut section.
