Sergio Germán Romero (born February 22, 1987 in Bernardo de Irigoyen ) is an Argentine football player . The goalkeeper is under contract with Manchester United and is also active in the Argentine national team .
Career
society
In 2004 Romero joined the professional squad of the Argentine club Racing Club Avellaneda . There he was under contract until 2007 before he moved to AZ Alkmaar in Europe . The transfer fee was € 1.5 million. At Avellaneda he was only a replacement and only came on a few missions. But already in his first season at Alkmaar he started playing regularly and was in competition with Joey Didulica and Boy Waterman . Romero played his first game for the red and whites on September 30, 2007, when the regular number one, Boy Waterman, had to be replaced due to an injury. In his first season as a regular goalkeeper, he stayed in 18 league games without conceding a goal in 2008/09. In March 2009, however, he broke his hand out of anger over a defeat in the Cup against NAC Breda . Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate the championship with the AZ Alkmaar in April, three game days before the end. In the summer of 2011, the Argentine moved to Sampdoria Genoa in Italy .
In mid-August 2013 Romero switched to the French Ligue 1 for AS Monaco for a year on loan with an option to buy .
For the 2015/16 season Romero moved to the Premier League for Manchester United . He received a three-year contract until June 30, 2018 with the option of another season and met coach Louis van Gaal , under whom he already played at AZ Alkmaar.
In July 2017, Romero extended his contract with the Red Devils early until 2021.
National team
Romero was a junior international for Argentina . For the South American Junior Championship 2007 he was nominated. Behind Brazil, his team took second place and qualified for the 2007 U20 World Youth Championship in Canada . After playing only 0-0 against the Czech Republic at the beginning of the group stage and thus had a bumpy start to the tournament, both teams met again in the final. There the young footballers of Argentina prevailed 2-1. For the Olympic Games 2008 Romero was appointed to the squad of the Argentines. There he became, as number 2 behind Óscar Ustari , Olympic champion.
At the 2010 and 2014 World Championships , Romero was the Argentinian regular goalkeeper and played all games. In the 2014 semi-final game against the Netherlands , he was voted “ Man of the Match ” after he parried twice on penalties , bringing his team to the final against Germany . Because of his performance in the tournament, Romero was nominated for the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper of the World Cup . Romero only conceded four goals in seven games of the World Cup, like the ultimately excellent German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer . Shortly before the 2018 World Cup, he was injured so that he missed the tournament in Russia.
