action

In 1974 the young Thaddeus Sivana is on the road with his father and brother when both suddenly disappear from the car, the windows freeze and he finds himself in a magical cave, the rock of eternity. There are petrified monsters there, the Seven Deadly Sins, and the boy meets the wizard Shazam, who puts him to the test of not being tempted to touch Envy's eye. When Thaddeus, seduced by the whispers of the deadly sins, tries to grab the eye, Shazam realizes that he is not worthy and sends a new search spell out into the world. Thaddeus, who suddenly finds himself back in his father's car, talks angrily about what he had experienced and thus causes an accident that paralyzes his father.

In the present, the young Billy Batson locks two policemen in a shop so that they can then use the police computer in their car to search for his mother, whom he lost at a fair around ten years earlier. However, he is caught by the police and given to the foster family of Victor and Rosa Vasquez, who also look after the children Mary, Darla, Eugene, Pedro and Freddy, with whom Billy has to share a room. Meanwhile, the adult Thaddeus Sivana has tracked down other people who had met the magician Shazam and who failed the exam. So he finds out how he can enter the rock of eternity again, steals the eye of Envy there and frees the seven deadly sins that he now carries within himself.

Although Billy doesn't get along well with the other children in the foster family at first, he defends Freddy when he is raised by bullies Burke and Brett at school that he no longer has a mother. Then Billy escapes from the two of them in a subway, from which suddenly all the passengers disappear and the windows freeze. When he gets out, he finds himself in Shazam's cave, who feels he is pure, even though Billy doesn't do it himself. Shazam uses his staff to transfer all of his powers to Billy and then crumbles to dust. Billy is now a tall, muscular man in his mid-thirties who wears a red suit with a white cloak. He pushes the baton away and finds himself in the subway, but still as an adult in this costume. In the foster home he can convince Freddy of his real identity and both decide to test together what superpowers Shazam has. As they gradually find out, he can shoot lightning from his hands, is super fast, bulletproof, fireproof, superhumanly strong and can fly. On returning to the foster home, Billy finally realizes that he can switch between his bodies with the word "Shazam", and Darla learns the secret.

Thaddeus Sivana has now visited his father's company and had all participants in a meeting killed by the deadly sins. His father, who never valued him, also dies. The deadly sins give him the task of looking for and killing Shazam, since only he is more powerful than himself.

Meanwhile, Billy skips school and publicly shows off his superpowers. So he saves Mary from an arriving car and the occupants of a bus, which falls from a bridge after Shazam destroyed the tires with one of his lightning bolts. When there is a conflict with Freddy, who has boasted at school that he knows Shazam, Sivana appears and fights Shazam, who is able to escape. Back at the foster home, the other children reveal to Billy that they knew about his conversation with Freddy from a TV show and thus found out that he is behind the superhero. Eugene also lets him know that he was able to track down his real mother. But when Billy visits her, she is very dismissive and admits that she knowingly left him at the market at the time, because she thought he was in better care with the police.

In the meantime, Sivana has also found out the true identity of Shazam and for this reason kidnaps Freddy, Darla, Eugene, Pedro and Mary. When he asks Shazam to transfer all his powers to him, a fight ensues, in the course of which they come to the rock of eternity, where the staff that was left behind still lies. With his help, Shazam can finally share his powers with the other foster children, who then also become superheroes. Together they can separate all deadly sins from Sivana, capture them in the eye of Envy and thus defeat him. Then they bring the eye back to the rock of eternity, where all deadly sins are petrified again. Billy sees himself as part of the foster family for the first time and comes as Shazam to visit Freddy at school with Superman.

In one post-credit scene , Sivana sits in a prison cell, scribbling the walls with magical symbols. Suddenly he hears a voice and sees Mister Mind on the window ledge , who explains to him that there are other ways to achieve magic, and incidentally mentions the "seven worlds".

production

prehistory

David F. Sandberg , director of Shazam! , at Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2018
Zachary Levi plays the title role Shazam in the film

The first movie adaptation of Captain Marvel dates back to 1941: Republic Pictures produced a twelve-part serial entitled Adventures of Captain Marvel with Tom Tyler in the lead role .

The next production of a cinema adaptation about Captain Marvel took place in the early 2000s: The company New Line Cinema began to work on a film adaptation of Captain Marvel with Peter Segal as director, who also acted as producer alongside Michael Ewing , and John August as screenwriter . When preproduction was already progressing in March 2008, New Line Cinema was bought by Warner Bros. and incorporated as a subsidiary . After the new parent company of New Line Cinema achieved financial success in the same year with the darkly designed film The Dark Knight , but suffered a failure in the same period with the family-friendly film Speed Racer , the Captain- Marvel adaptation darker than originally intended. In August 2009 it was announced that Bill Birch and Geoff Johns would write the new script, while Segal was retained as director. About a year later, the Los Angeles Times reported that discussions had begun to discard the theatrical adaptation and instead plan a television series on Captain Marvel . On December 23, 2013, Segal announced in an interview that the production of the planned film about Captain Marvel would not be pursued further.

Emergence

Since May 2012 there have been talks between Dwayne Johnson and Warner Bros. about an acting contract for a role in a film from the DC Comics . In 2014, there was increasing evidence that Johnson would have a role in a film about Captain Marvel . In March 2014, he confirmed on Twitter that he would play a role in the comic book adaptation as the antihero Black Adam . In October of the same year, the film was announced as part of an announcement of nine more films from the DC Extended Universe by Kevin Tsujihara , director of Warner Bros. , for April 5, 2019. A cinema release in Germany is planned one day in advance. Also in the same year, Darren Lemke was a scriptwriter for Shazam! announced.

The president of New Line Cinema , Toby Emmerich , told the magazine Entertainment Weekly , the film will stand out from other comic book movies; with a sense of humor and "full commitment" ("with real stakes"). In October, Warner Bros. announced that Shazam! is among the films to be released soon. In January 2017, Henry Gayden began work on the script, while in July, David F. Sandberg was named to direct the film. Production is scheduled to start in early 2018. Contrary to the original announcement, Dwayne Johnson will not appear as Black Adam in the film, but will later appear in its solo film. In January 2018, British actor Mark Strong confirmed that he would be in Shazam! as the antagonist Doctor Sivana will be seen. Furthermore, it was originally planned that Henry Cavill should have a cameo as Superman in the film . Since he didn't have time to come to a school in Toronto for the temporary filming, the film features Ryan Handley , the stunt double for Zachary Levi , in Superman's costume.

Filming began at Pinewood Studios in Toronto in late January 2018 .

The film music is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch , who most recently worked with Sandberg for the films Lights Out and Annabelle 2 . The soundtrack, which includes a total of 29 pieces of music, was released by WaterTower Music on April 5, 2019.

The film was released on April 4, 2019 in German cinemas and the following day in US cinemas. On June 16, 2019, the film was released in the United States on Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray , which contain over 20 minutes of deleted and alternate scenes. From September 5, 2019, it will also be available in Germany on DVD , Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray.

reception

Reviews

Initial reactions after the end of the press embargo at the beginning of March 2019 were consistently positive. Above all, the humor and the family elements in the film are praiseworthy, whereas there are slight deductions for the opponent. As of July 20, 2020, the film was able to convince 90 percent of all critics at Rotten Tomatoes and received an average rating of 7.26 out of 10 possible points.

A statue of Shazam at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018

The film critic Antje Wessels felt at Shazam! at Marvel's Spider-Man -reboot recalls, previously a new genre coloring in the two years MCU brought and Heist movies and political thriller to sympathetic high school or coming-of-age comedy added. In his script, screenwriter Henry Gayden spends at least as much time on little Billy's family life and the friendship of the two boys as he does on the struggle between good and evil and everything that has to do with superheroes , Wessels continues. Shazam! is in equal parts a touching story about family values, cheerful buddy comedy with all emotional ups and downs, a confrontation with a sudden heroic existence and of course a classic superhero action in which Shazam very soon has to defend himself against a dangerous opponent. When Billy in the form of his alter ego Shazam discovers one superpower after the other by chance and is encouraged by his pop culture-loving friend to try out other skills, the slowly swaying dynamic speaks for itself: “It doesn't matter whether you've never seen a superhero film has seen, or knows the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe by heart: In these minutes Shazam! carry everyone away. "

Gross profit

The film had its first success in previews in over 1,200 cinemas on March 23, 2019, which grossed around 3.3 million US dollars . Aquaman , the most successful film from the DC Extended Universe to date , only brought in 2.9 million US dollars through previews. On the starting weekend, Shazam! Reached first place in the US American charts with grossing around 53.45 million US dollars and third in the German cinema charts with 122,500 visitors. On the second weekend, Shazam! Holds at the top of the US cinema charts with approximately $ 25 million in revenue. A week later, it dropped to second place with grossing $ 17.34 million. The film recorded a total of 390,672 visitors in Germany. The worldwide revenues amount to 365.97 million US dollars, of which he was able to generate 140.37 million in the North American area.

Sequels

A possible sequel to the film was already indicated with the mid-credit scene . In this, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana was visited by a caterpillar, the villain Mister Mind, and informed about the fact that magical powers can also be achieved by other means. The cliffhanger indicated that Sivana and Mister Mind could team up in a possible sequel. On the other hand, Shazam and Black Adam will not meet yet. According to Levi, the plan is to first realize the antagonist's solo film and thus slowly “work towards the meeting of the two”. Just a few days after the film opened in theaters , it was confirmed that the author Henry Gayden would also write the script for the sequel. In addition, a return of David F. Sandberg to the director's chair should be very likely. In June 2019, Levi announced that the script was already in development and that filming was expected to begin in the first half of 2020. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated to hit US cinemas on November 4, 2022.
