The boarding school for skiers in Stams , or Schigymnasium Stams for short , is a school in Stams near Innsbruck in Tyrol , and the oldest ski school and one of the most successful sports schools in the world.

The school is right next to Stams Abbey .

History and organization

The school was founded in 1967, as the first of its kind in the world, as a training academy for Austrian skiing. After initially unsuccessful years - by 1973 only 15 of the 80 alpine climbers had become a member of the Austrian Ski Association  (ÖSV) - a graduate won the first world championship medal in 1975 and the first Olympic gold medal in 1976. Today the school, together with Schladming (Styria) and Saalfelden (Land Salzburg), is one of the most successful sports schools in Austria.

The school is jointly owned by the Republic of Austria , the State of Tyrol and the Cistercian Abbey of Stams , and the school is supported by the school association, Association of Boarding Schools for Skisporters Stams .
It is currently managed by Arno Staudacher, the administrator is Erwin Fill, and the club director is Anton Neururer.

Overall, the following were achieved:

  • 100 gold, 78 silver, 82 bronze medals at the Olympic Winter Games and World Championships. As of November 2017, there were even more than 300 World Cup and Olympic medals.

Reports of sexual assault

On December 2, 2017, the Standard published an interview with an anonymous witness, an ÖSV active who went to school here in Stams in the 1980s and 90s. This describes that "very many" younger students from older students suffered "pasting" at the time, a "deeply sexual power game" in which - "rarely in secret" - the male victim was given the contents of a tube of toothpaste or, in the worst case, wet snow Klister (sic!), Pasty, sticky climbing wax for cross-country ski anal was introduced. Victims would have become perpetrators later and sometimes struggled with what had happened later in life. Teachers and educators "often know what's going on". Nicola Werdenigg's recent outing as a female victim in the 1970s "helps prevent future acts of violence."

Several cases of abuse were recently reported to the Tyrolean Victim Protection Agency from Stams, but also from the Neustift Ski Middle School , Stubaital, Tyrol. The most recent case is three years old.
