action

The architect Peter Highman only has five days left to travel from Atlanta to Los Angeles for the birth of his son, who is scheduled to be born by caesarean section . Already at the airport, an obviously stoned driver is pulling the door of his taxi - there is a strange man with a perm and a dog in the car. Peter, on the other hand, already makes himself suspicious during the baggage check, after all the strange man has swapped one of his luggage with a Peter and he suddenly has marijuana in his suitcase. On the plane, Peter meets again with the man who draws the attention of Peter, who was busy with his Blackberry shortly before take-off , to the need to switch off all technical devices, talks about terrorists and bombs and finally, together with Peter from the airport police, as a potential terrorist Aircraft is referred. The incident is resolved quickly, but Peter can no longer fly home. He is considered suspicious, is placed on the prohibited list of all airlines and believes that his passport and money are in the luggage on the way to LA.

In the parking lot he meets the strange man who now introduces himself as Ethan Tremblay and wants to take him to Los Angeles together with the bulldog Sonny. Ethan, who was at his father's funeral in Atlanta and carries his father's ashes with him in a coffee container, wants to go to Los Angeles for an interview for a role on the television series Two and a Half Men . Since Peter couldn't even rent a rental car without ID, he was forced to accept Ethan's offer. First the trip leads to Birmingham , where Ethan buys marijuana from the "drug supplier" Heidi, supposedly to treat his glaucoma with it. Only then does Peter realize that Ethan spent around $ 200 on drugs of the total of $ 260 in cash. He has his wife Sarah Bargeld instruct him in Ethan's name, but it turns out that Ethan's last name "Tremblay" is just a stage name; in reality he is called "Chase", so that neither of the assigned money is paid out. Peter makes a joke about the alleged war experiences of the man at the till and is beaten up by the man sitting in the wheelchair . Peter and Ethan spend the night in the car, with Peter being disgusted to learn that Ethan masturbates as a bedtime ritual and the dog does the same.

The next morning, Peter spontaneously loads all of Ethan's things out of the car and drives on without him. However, he notices that Ethan's father's "urn" is still in the car and turns back. Together Ethan and Peter set the way up to Dallas continued where Ethan driving in falling asleep expire and turns over the car. While Ethan gets away without scratches, Peter has broken his arm and the bulldog has to wear a ruff. Peter is picked up from the hospital by his best friend Darryl and, although he initially refuses, has to take Ethan and the Great Dane with him. It turns out that Darryl had met Sarah nine months ago in another city and pictures in Darryl's apartment also lead Ethan to suspect that Darryl has (had) a relationship with Sarah and that the unborn child is therefore not from Peter. That in turn leaves a correspondingly angry call on Sarah's answering machine. The three men accidentally drink Ethan's father's ashes, which Darryl mistook for coffee and therefore brewed it.

Peter and Ethan drive on in a car borrowed from Darryl, Ethan takes drugs and misses the right exit, so that they suddenly come to the border with Mexico . Since the whole car is smoky marijuana and Peter cannot identify himself, both are detained by the border guards. Ethan escapes and a short time later frees the tied Peter with a stolen police car. You drive to the Grand Canyon , where Ethan scattered his father's ashes. He confesses to Peter that he took his wallet on the plane in Atlanta - the fight breaks out. She is interrupted by a call for Peter: Sarah assures him that she has always been faithful and tells him that she has gone into labor. Ethan and Peter's journey to Los Angeles continues and Ethan, bleeding from the brawl, searches for bandages in the glove compartment of the police car. He finds a gun that fires a shot that hits Peter in the leg. Completely battered, with a bleeding leg and torn things, Peter finally arrives at the hospital and collapses on Sarah's bed. After all, it is Ethan who cuts the baby's umbilical cord as Peter is receiving medical attention in the meantime. The baby is a girl and is to be named Rosie.

A little later you can see Peter and Sarah watching TV in bed. It's on Two and a Half Men and Ethan has been given a supporting role as Jake's tutor who happens to be dealing in marijuana.

Reviews

Cinema found that Todd Phillips hadhigh expectationswith hisfilm Hangover, shotbefore the cut-off date : “'Hangover' is a real screamer, while 'Cut-off date' can only be praised as funny and amusing [...]. What makes the film absolutely worth seeing are its actors. [...] In a wonderful way, both actors manage to get the biggest laughs with dead serious expressions. Conclusion: Don't expect too much, the new comedy from the 'Hangover' maker is not a screamer, but a wonderfully played smiley cinema. "

For Outnow , the deadline was “one of the funniest films of the year”: “Due Date is a classic buddy / road movie. The end is clear from the outset, but the film manages to entertain and make the audience laugh without any problems. "

critic.de found that the film “lacks the courage to be infantile that Philips has shown at Hangover , and in the midst of all the beautiful, calculated postcard images with the right sound and track, it lacks the warmth that distinguishes a ticket for two . "In the end, the" impression of a largely entertaining film with great moments "remains.

According to film-dienst , the deadline is a "buddy comedy conceived as a road movie, which chases its lovable, immature characters through a real hell trip on painful to reluctantly embarrassing gags". Although the humor that unfolds in the process is “sometimes anything but subtle”, the film wins over “due to the sheer absurdity” with which “his male characters, who are overwhelmed by adult life, try to get by”.
