background

Director Matt Reeves (2013)
Leading actor Robert Pattinson (2017)

In July 2015, a solo film about the character Batman was announced, which would take place after the events of the films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League . Ben Affleck , who was also planned as the script together with Geoff Johns , was to act as director and lead actor . It was planned that the production work would start after Affleck's production Live by Night . In March 2016 it was also announced that the script had already been written. Affleck announced that he was inspired by the comics for The Batman , but that the plot is a whole new story and the film has the working title The Batman .

Contrary to the original plans, it was announced on January 30, 2017 that Affleck is no longer responsible as the director of The Batman . By January 2017, Affleck and the studio should have made the decision that someone else should lead the project. The reason for his withdrawal was that he wanted to concentrate on his role as an actor. Instead, there have been efforts to prefer Matt Reeves or, alternatively, to replace Matt Ross Affleck as director. The original script was rewritten by Chris Terrio . Finally, on February 23, 2017, it was confirmed that Reeves had signed a contract to direct and co-produce The Batman . However, production was postponed because Reeves still had to finish production of the film Planet of the Apes: Survival by June 2017. Reeves announced that he would like to focus on Batman as a detective in The Batman . In order to realize the vision of his film, Reeves rewrote the script, as announced in July 2017.

In the same month it was also announced that it was unclear whether Affleck would continue to play the title role. In January 2019, Affleck finally confirmed that he would no longer be seen in The Batman . He was replaced by Robert Pattinson in May 2019 , which means that the film is no longer counted in the DC Extended Universe . In addition to Pattinson, Nicholas Hoult , Armie Hammer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were also considered for the role. In October 2019 it was confirmed that the actress Zoë Kravitz will play the role of Catwoman and Paul Dano that of the Riddler . A little later, Jeffrey Wright was hired as Commissioner Gordon . Andy Serkis has been confirmed as Alfred Pennyworth by Matt Reeves . John Turturro , on the other hand, is said to play the gang boss Carmine Falcone . It was also reported that Colin Farrell is said to be in negotiations for the role of the penguin .

The film music is composed by Oscar winner Michael Giacchino .

Filming began in London on January 27, 2020 , but was interrupted in mid-March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Only a quarter of the filming is to be continued in London in September 2020 instead of changing the location as originally planned.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in German cinemas on June 24, 2021, and in US cinemas the following day. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US launch date has been postponed to October 1, 2021. The German theatrical release should take place the day before.
