Thiès [ tjɛs ] is a large city with over 310,000 inhabitants in the central west of Senegal, a link between the Cap-Vert peninsula with the densely populated metropolitan region of Dakar and the interior. It is the prefecture of the Thiès department and the Thiès region .
history
Built as a fort by the French in 1863, the city now houses a polytechnic, a museum and one of the oldest cinemas in Senegal that is still in operation. The Senegalese railway workers' uprising against racist working conditions took place here in 1947 and 1948.
Thiès is the seat of the Diocese of Thiès, created in 1969 .

Through the national transportation hub Thiès leading national road N2 . It connects the city to the west via Rufisque with the major cities of the metropolitan region of Dakar , with Pikine , Guédiawaye and the capital Dakar . To the north and east it continues in a wide arc, initially following the Grande-Côte at some distance and then following the left bank of Senegal , through the cities of Tivaouane , Kébémer , Louga , Saint-Louis , Richard Toll , Dagana , Ourossogui and finally with Kidira to the Malian border. From the N2, the N 3 branches off to the east in Thiès . It connects the city with Khombole , Bambey , Diourbel , Mbacké , Touba , Dahra Linguère , Ranérou , Ourossogui and Matam and with the border with Mauritania on the banks of Senegal . To the south there is a connection via secondary roads to the N 1 to the port city of Mbour on the Petite-Côte, 40 kilometers away, and to the populous south of the country.
In addition, the Dakar – Saint-Louis railway, which was completed in 1885 and runs through the coastal hinterland, and the line that went into operation in 1923 and is important for freight traffic in the peanut basin and with neighboring Mali branch out at Thiès station to the east via Diourbel and Tambacounda to the border station at Kidira and across the border river Falémé . From this main line there were two branches to the pilgrimage center Touba and the port city of Kaolack .
Thiès is connected to the international air transport network via Dakar-Blaise Diagne Airport, which is 20 km away .
economy
The city is well known for its carpet industry. One of the largest factories in the country was built specifically for this in 1966. The city is also a cattle trading and meat processing center. The city is a road and rail junction. Rice , cassava , peanuts , millet and fruits are predominantly produced in the region. In nearby Palo is important for export aluminum - phosphate mined.
Town twinning
Thiès maintains since 1965 a twinning the Tunisian Sousse and since 1992 at Caen in France . In 1966 a partnership agreement was signed with the city of Jena, but it did not have a long-term effect. There was a friendship between the cities of Solingen in Germany since 1990; since 2016 it has been a town twinning.
