action

Trip works as a roadie for the American metal band Metallica. When he arrives at the stadium where the concert is taking place, he meets the individual band members. For this, surreal scenes are sometimes used, as is also the case later in the plot. Shortly after the performance began in the sold-out stadium, the tour manager sends him into town to do an urgent job involving a broken-down truck. From now on the film alternates again and again between the experiences of Trip and the Metallica concert taking place at the same time. Because he was concentrating on the city map, Trip overlooked a red traffic light and stopped at the intersection with his van after an emergency stop. His vehicle is rammed by another vehicle and Trip yells at the driver. He escapes in horror when he sees a dead policeman being dragged through the streets by a horse. Trip continues his search on foot. He gets into a street battle between rioters and the police. He notices a masked rider who is hanging a riot from a lamppost with a rope. Trip flees from this scene and finally finds the truck with the important cargo on the loading area, namely a bag with unknown contents. On his way back to the concert hall, he is followed by the masked rider and an angry mob and finally caught. Trip sets himself on fire and finds himself on the roof of a house, facing the masked rider alone. He manages to defeat him, with both the buildings around them and Metallica's set crumbling. When he enters the stadium, it is deserted. Trip takes a seat in the audience and the musicians from Metallica play the instrumental Orion . In the last scene the bag is shown again, the contents of which remain a secret.

background

The idea for a Metallica film arose as early as 1997 and there were initial discussions between Lars Ulrich and IMAX . Around 2010 the idea was picked up again, according to Lars Ulrich, the band's claim was to make a feature film set against the backdrop of a Metallica concert with a real audience. Discussions with various directors followed and the choice fell on Nimród Antal, who developed the figure of Roadies Trip and the other characters and wrote a script based on the band's ideas. A 360-degree stage that is 61 meters long and 18 meters wide was specially made for the live recordings. This was used at Metallica appearances in the Canadian cities of Edmonton and Vancouver. With 24 cameras, a total of 60 hours of material were recorded during several shows, which form the basis for the live sequences of the film. The selection of the pieces shown represents not only the most successful songs of the band but also the favorite songs of the fans. The film cost around $ 32 million to produce.

reception

The reviews of the film were mixed. The main storyline was particularly criticized, while the live scenes received mostly positive feedback. The magazine Cinema praises the "sometimes spectacular [n] concert recordings in 3D", but the general plot is "an absurd (fantasy) adventure ... on the level of meaningless music videos". On the other hand, the website kino.de writes that the framework gives the film "an additional emotional component" and sums it up:

"A haunting, stylish heavy metal event on the big screen, with the most popular Metallica songs and musicians close at hand."

The music magazine Rock Hard praises the concert portion, but describes the feature film portion as superfluous. The author complains that the narrative thread cannot be merged with the concert excerpts and that there is no meaningful resolution of the story:

“As a METALLICA fan you should have seen the strip. ... But you are a little stunned that the band has invested so much time and money in a half-baked idea ... "
