The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 18, 2019. The 209.5-kilometer mountain stage led from Toulouse to Bagnères-de-Bigorre - the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees . The Belgian Jasper Philipsen ( UAE Team Emirates ) no longer competed for the tour. The stage start was at 11:30 a.m. at Stadium Municipal , the sharp start was at 11:51 a.m. at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport .

Race course

After several attempts, a breakaway group was successfully formed after 43 kilometers. 40 drivers were in the front group, including several big names. These included Peter Sagan , Gregor Mühlberger , Daniel Oss , Maximilian Schachmann , Michael Mørkøv , Mathias Frank , Tony Gallopin , Oliver Naesen , Sonny Colbrelli , Iván García , Imanol Erviti , Dylan Teuns , Pello Bilbao , Dylan Groenewegen , Mike Teunissen , Alberto Bettiol , Simon Clarke , Tom Scully , Matteo Trentin , Simon Yates , Greg Van Avermaet , Serge Pauwels , Rui Costa , Alexander Kristoff , Fabio Felline , Jasper Stuyven , Michael Matthews , Nikias Arndt , Cees Bol , Nicolas Roche , Pierre-Luc Périchon , Julien Simon , Tiesj Benoot , Roger Kluge , Tim Wellens , Lilian Calmejane , Andrea Pasqualon , Edvald Boasson Hagen , Michael Valgren and Kévin Ledanois . They quickly achieved a lead of between four and five minutes.

Peter Sagan was able to extend his lead in the sprinter classification by being the first to reach the intermediate sprint ahead of Colbrelli and Kristoff. At the beginning of the second ascent ( Col de Peyresourde ) Lilian Calmejane and Sonny Colbrelli attacked the leading group, but Colbrelli could not keep up for long and returned to the chasing group about 5 kilometers before the summit. In the further course the chasing group gradually reduced, especially the sprinters were not very interested in being in the leading group and drove at their own pace. Shortly before the mountain classification, Calmejane was overtaken by the pursuers Wellens, Pauwels, Benoot, Clarke and Frank. Wellens was the first to reach the mountain classification and consolidated his lead in the mountain classification. The peloton reached the Col de Peyresourde about 6 minutes later. In the descent, Simon Clarke tried his luck as a soloist and worked out a lead of around 30 seconds on the now 25-man chasing group. At the foot of the last mountain classification, the Hourquette d'Ancizan (9.9 km at 7.5%), he was just over a minute ahead of Matteo Trentin, who was able to break away from the chasing group and tried to catch up with Clarke. The lead over the chasing group was about 1:25 minutes. The distance to the peloton was around 6 minutes at the time.

Several riders from the chasing group got into difficulties climbing the mountain and could no longer keep up with the pace of the chasing group, including Tim Wellens, who wore the mountain jersey. In the chasing group there was an attack by Swiss Mathias Frank, followed by Austrian Gregor Mühlberger. A kilometer later, Simon Yates went on the offensive with Nicolas Roche and Tony Gallopin and quickly joined the chasing duo. About 5 kilometers from the summit, Clarke was overtaken by Trentin. The chasing group behind Trentin and Clarke grew to eight drivers as Schachmann, Bilbao and Pauwels had caught up. Clarke let the chase group catch up with him a little later. At this point, Simon Yates decided to attack again, Mühlberger followed. The duo quickly came to the leader, who could no longer keep up with the pace and had to let go. The top duo reached the summit first, 6 seconds ahead of Bilbao and 50 seconds ahead of the chasing group. The peloton crossed the summit 8 minutes behind.

On the descent, Bilbao caught up with the top duo. With a lead of more than a minute over their pursuers, the top trio decided to work together, they maintained their lead and made the victory among themselves. Simon Yates won the stage victory in the sprint, who crossed the finish line ahead of Bilbao and Mühlberger. The peloton reached the stage goal with a gap of 9:35 minutes. Matteo Trentin was named the most competitive rider of the stage. The Trek-Segafredo team took the lead in the team classification . There were no further changes in the other ratings.

The Italian Giacomo Nizzolo ( Team Dimension Data ) finished the tour during the stage, he was involved in a fall the day before and could not recover from it. The Australian Rohan Dennis ( Bahrain-Merida ) also gave up the tour, got off his bike in the transfer zone - surprisingly for his team - and refused to continue.
