Troia is an Italian municipality with 6985 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in Apulia , 17 km south of Lucera . The city is located near the ancient road from Benevento to Brindisi on a hilltop southwest of Foggia, from which the plain of the Tavoliere can be overlooked.
history
Troia was founded on the ruins of ancient Aecae (later Colonia Augusta Apulia) around 1022 and gained importance as an Italian episcopal city. In 1229 Troy was destroyed by Emperor Friedrich II .
The Romanesque cathedral of S. Maria Assunta , consecrated in 1129, is famous with the mighty bronze gates from 1119, construction of which began in 1093. It is the oldest and best-preserved building of his style in Apulia, which is followed by replicas on the road from Benevento to Monte Gargano.
